In 2010-11 Hampshire County Council spent £381 million on social care - equivalent to 53 per cent of its budget.
In 2024, it estimates it'll spend £809 million - equivalent to 83 per cent of its budget. That's unsustainable.
From the FT:
We are teaming up with @LSECities to bring the voices of young people into the heart of debates around the green transition in Islington.
Here's how! 🧵

🎉We’ve wrapped up the first series of our Islington Climate Panel sessions!
Over eight sessions, 35 residents, chosen by lottery to represent our diverse communities, came together to explore what a climate-resilient Islington looks like and how we can get there. 🌍

It speaks to just how hard it’s going to be to reform our deeply broken economic model that our politics is so narrow that Labour, with a 20 point poll lead, feels it won’t have the political space to reform the worst, most regressive tax in Britain.
Kendall says 'hidden unemployment' caused by ill-health takes real joblessness rate to 20% in some places.
UE statistics mean low UE can be falsely celebrated whilst millions are too ill to work.
It's sensible to discuss the statistics together more

"We need a national debate on the role of local government."
Councillor Martin Tett tells #R4Today the current one year budget system is 'hopeless' and a 2-5 year plan with central government is needed, as a new report says many councils face bankruptcy in the next few years.
My new piece for the @UniofBathIPR blog for the @ResearchTruud project.
Can the silos be broken? Cross-government working for public health
I discuss three strategies: bridging the silos, redisigning the silos, and decentralisation.

In @Telegraph and @TelGlobalHealth today, Kate Dun-Campbell and I set out why the imminent Smokefree Generation Bill is so important for preventing death and disease for generations to come (no ££-wall).
Short🧵

Excellent @HealthFdn analysis of the UK's stalling life expectancy
⬇️People born in 2020 are now expected to live four fewer years than 2010 projections.
❤️🩹 The stagnation in life expectancy was clear well before the pandemic
⚖️ Inequalities in life expectancy are widening

After scrapping of the Health Disparities White Paper, the Office for Health Improvement & Disparities is “effectively dismantled”, removing any departmental focus on health inequalities.
A hugely depressing move highlighting the erosion of PH nationally since PHE was dissolved.
Financial strain on councils continues to impact health and widen health inequalities.
@KMerrifieldTHF explains why today's local government finance settlement will do little to improve this picture. Further action is needed.

"When sovereign wealth funds are investing in your country’s children’s homes, you know something is very wrong"
A sobering article highlighting the immense dysfunctionality of the current children's care system -to the detriment of societies most vulnerable
🚸 “There were more than 100 inquiries for every available emergency care bed just before Christmas”
Justine Smith reports on the children’s care business: a huge policy failure that is failing the children it is designed to protect

Good to see but some of these also blocked planning Gove's planning reforms
🏠Temporary accom and children's care placements are some of the council's highest costs. ⬇️supply = ⬆️costs
Councils need more funding, better allocated, but also legalisation to reduce costs

"at the heart of this issue are questions of what local government should be for: is it a mechanism for delivering an ever-narrower range of services? Or is it there to shape, preserve and champion an area and its people?"
"The most deprived fifth of areas receive, on average, 9% less local government funding (£92 per person) than their share of needs"
@TheIFS evidence shows the clear need for #localgov funding reform, given the current inequities
Public services are key to supporting the building blocks of health 🧱
But many local authorities don't receive funding in line with local need, according to our new report based on @TheIFS analysis. This has to change.
