• The Supreme Court ruled the act is constitutional
• #FirstNations child welfare law supersedes provincial law
• The court declined (avoided?) having to answer the question about S.35 rights
Speaking to Chiefs & CFS leaders this morning, lots to celebrate here.

Breaking: The Supreme Court of Canada rejects an appeal by the Quebec Government, which challenged the constitutionality of the federal government’s Indigenous child welfare law.
I would urge Canadians to consider some kind of observation. Be mournful on Remembrance Day, wave the flag on Canada Day, and reflect on TR day. There are people who want to politicize all three of those, but I've never had trouble ignoring them. https://t.co/HaeCHkGecU
Change in federal politics. @MarcMillerVM is out as minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations and former parliamentary secretary for Justice Gary Anandasangaree takes over.
Thanks Chief @lwhitecalf for the invitation to Treaty Day at @SweetgrassFN. Have had the opportunity to work on a few Highways items with Chief Lorie.
Great days ahead of us here in SK…looking forward to continue working with our First Nations and Métis neighbours and friends.
🗣️ANNO: Joanna Bernard selected as interim National Chief by @AFN_Updates. She'll need to work with government on its legislative agenda for #FirstNations police services, co-developing Indigenous health legislation, and safe drinking water and wastewater infrastructure. #cdnpoli
The FSIN Chiefs-in-Assembly just passed a resolution to declare a state of emergency on the opioid crisis in Saskatchewan #FirstNations communities, called on federal & provincial govts to act.

As someone who works closely with elders, ppl really need to rethink how to include them meaningfully. I once drove 40 minutes to pick up an elder, another 40 to take him to the event where they asked him to pray and welcome people- then said “thx you can go now!” He was so tired.
As of today, 159,000 public servants are on strike across the country. Here is information on programs and services that will be affected at Indigenous Services.
If you think residential schools were a great place for children, you need to look at the Indigenous stats for:
- Incarcerations
- Addictions
- Education
- Child & Family
- Homelessness
If residential schools were a place for learning, we'd have high rates of educated, successful Indigenous people in Canada. Sadly this isn't what we see today. It's not hard to go back to that common denominator that got us here.
It may surprise some, but there is no question @JustinTrudeau has made investing in Indigenous priorities one of the single largest things the Govt of Canada has done since 2015.
Not to say there is not more to do — or that we have come to close to resolve harm & need.

@tylermeredith@JustinTrudeau This is an important chart, Tyler. Thanks for sharing!
I often wonder how well understood the needs of #Indigenous communities are in finance/treasury/political staff, especially during budget making.
Would be a great conversation to have sometime.
Something missed in #Budget23 coverage was investments in economic #reconciliation.
#Indigenous peoples have been subject to poverty-on-purpose policies for hundreds of years.
Here’s a few thoughts alongside very smart people:
