#Ethiopia, a compilation of some sources through out the 20th century pointing out that Welkait was mainly a Tigrigna speaking area. Thank you @EAfricanAffairs for putting some of the sources together.
π―"The borders linking Sudan, Ethiopia and Eritrea are no longer merely dividing lines between states. They form part of an interconnected regional security system in which domestic wars and geopolitical interests overlap, making any new outbreak of fighting in Tigray a factor in reshaping the security landscape of the entire region." https://t.co/XtYf61sUQK
@kevinsky001@SlipSwish@sajid_nadeem78 will still be. Hopefully will be peaceful. Unfortunatelly there is a lot of power play going on and the people will be the ones suffering - TPLF leaders are also not fighting for freedom, as one can see the increased steps of repression they are implementing in Tigray.
@kevinsky001@SlipSwish@sajid_nadeem78 I agree and from this one can't exempt current TPLF leaders - they have built a confrontational path with Abiy that will lead to disgrace. I would just not be so confident that a potential rise up would be just non-violent in the future. I would depend a lot on the support there
@kevinsky001@SlipSwish@sajid_nadeem78 The war in 2020 was in a great part due to mutual insecurities and the lack of dialogue and reassurance. Abiy is not serious about dialogue, because he is probably on a quest to centralize power. National dialogue - another potential good idea - has been a farse and show off.
@kevinsky001@SlipSwish@sajid_nadeem78 It is an example of how a potential good idea - disarmament of ethnic regiona forces - was badly put in place, without negotiations, reassurances, nothing, and in turn lead to more violence and destabilization. That is why I think the article from Jawar I shared is very revealing
@kevinsky001@SlipSwish@sajid_nadeem78 that he would be the 7th King of Ethiopia. I doubt very much he will even try to prepare a transition, but that we will see in the future.
@kevinsky001@SlipSwish@sajid_nadeem78 of political choice, but draining all the system so that he is the only real option. Rumours are that he now wants to change the political system to presidentialism, where he would be then the president. I think one should not take lightly his story of how his mother told him
@kevinsky001@SlipSwish@sajid_nadeem78 are in Tigray. Third, Tigray was historically one of the power centers. And forth, I doubt about the viability of an independent landlocked Tigray.
@kevinsky001@SlipSwish@sajid_nadeem78 I doubt there wouldn't be much sense for Tigray to become independent. First, the region Tigray did not have the same borders as nowadays, as it was not a a uniquelly ethnical defined region. Second, on historic grounds, several of the important historical landmarks of Ethiopia
@kevinsky001@SlipSwish@sajid_nadeem78 Abiy's regime - which - and censoring myself to believe that 2018 transition would magically change the political system - makes sense, taking into account that many of the main political decision-makers were already there during EPRDF's time.
@kevinsky001@SlipSwish@sajid_nadeem78 PP included many of the former members of EPRDF, except for the TPLF. Impresionment of critics (including ellected politicians) and journalists, pressure over social media influencers, militarization, war rethoric against Eritrea, etc. Violence and repression is much present in
