@QueenMab87@TaranaBurke But that wasn’t even my point with the original comments: lots of people who want to see Cosby, Spacey and others face justice did change their opinion. It’s not like they just didn’t like them before
@QueenMab87@TaranaBurke I’m asking if accountability is actually what matters here. Cosby being in jail wouldn’t undo the harm, although I wish he were still there—And it’s ok if the answer is “no.”
I’m not saying “haven’t these men suffered enough, it’s “what does accountability REALLY count for”
@QueenMab87@TaranaBurke A senate investigation and resignation isn’t *nothing*, didn’t produce a lawsuit though; idk if anyone tried bringing charges against LCK but he’s def been addressing the behavior publicly. But none of this fixes what was done and it’s ok to say repair isn’t actually possible
@QueenMab87@TaranaBurke I agree that that outcomes weren’t totally satisfactory but I feel like calling it “losing a few jobs” is downplaying what happened: there were court cases against Cosby and Spacey—Cosby did go to prison before being released for prosecutorial misconduct…
@QueenMab87@TaranaBurke I promise this is a sincere question: what would you call an effective cancellation?
Would you say these people have any real level of current cultural relevance?
@QueenMab87@TaranaBurke Short of the total removal of these people from society, total cancellation of anyone is pretty much impossible.
SOMEONE’s always gonna pay to see the famous person. The best we can hope for is marginalization from polite society, and I’d say they’re still pretty “out.”
@QueenMab87@TaranaBurke I mean yeah, there’s always gonna be core of supporters for anything—the fact that they still have supporters doesn’t mean the cancellation was ineffective
@LuciaLobosvilla Azula discourse is really just a bunch of people refusing to accept the character they got, so they pretend she’s a different character
@DreamigeraJ@antiviral_mktng Compromise is good, but you have to know that if you continue to be unable to uphold agreements, you will damage the friendship because relationships aren’t just about liking someone
@Ripley_Plisson@PoorOldRoloTony I’m pretty sure it’s a class thing. He has wealthy waspy tastes that are more subdued—MJ wants to feel special on a celebration day
@Jim_O_Thee@HDIntegrations@Michael_Druggan The criticism is that he’s almost certainly NOT living his life the way he wants, he’s living it betting he will become immortal, which he won’t.
Sooner or later he’ll develop something, like we all do, realize his fragility and misery and it will destroy him.
@DShenanigist@neincubed No it doesn’t. It just requires them to have a blanket dynamic of each running interference for the other unless otherwise stated.
@Vince97023186@drewandthedon@douche_dud@ayofromthedead I think his point is that it’s now less natural to buy them. Like it involves navigating a hurdle and he doesn’t understand why someone would even try to get around it
@ratvisionist It’s less that it works this way and more that it works the other way—not all bourgeoisie have a lot of money but being upper class is a capital in itself that can be turned into other kinds of capital
@douche_dud@ayofromthedead They are more expensive, easy to lose, have to charge, and sometimes the sound cuts out as they connect to different devices. Lots of downsides
