Pretty fire to see one of my Sunday tweets transform into my debut column in the @FinancialReview
Shoutout twitter community you will see my takes first
The Canadian Liberals were deservedly dead in the water, down 20+ points in all the polling, due to their dreadful mismanagement of the country & deep unpopularity on the economy, cost of living, crime…you name it. The Conservatives had a talented and disciplined leader who was clearly going to win.
Then, after the Liberals dumped toxic Trudeau, Trump’s tariffs and insulting “51st state” trolling arrived like manna from heaven for the ruling leftist party. They made the election all about fighting tariffs and Trump, pivoting away from all the reasons they were set to lose. It worked. A massive reversal & an outside-influenced catastrophe for the Conservatives. A fourth straight term for the Liberals. Awful.
The Cope Take among some American righties is that Pierre lost because he didn’t bear hug Trump. Doing so would have been political suicide. The electorate up there is furious about the tariffs and disgusted by the nonsense annexation talk.
During the campaign, Trump said he didn’t care if he was tanking the Canadian Conservatives & preferred the leftist leader because he’d be weaker in negotiations. Well, now he’s got him. And so do Canadians. Congrats, everyone?
More to the point, why name seats after people at all? I’m not aware of any other jurisdiction in the world that does this. Most people can’t instantly recall the name of their MP, let alone the namesake of their electorate. Time to move to locality-based naming conventions.
As Leader of Canada’s common sense Conservatives, I have always been clear, we stand with Ukraine in its defence against Vladimir Putin’s illegal invasion.
I also firmly believe that the future of Ukraine must be determined by the Ukrainian people.
Conservatives will always stand on the side of freedom and democracy.
Russia invaded Ukraine based on 4 assumptions; 1. His Army was invincible - It wasn't.2. The Ukrainians wouldn't fight - how wrong he was. 3. The International community would fragment - it didn't.4. Ukrainian people would welcome Russia - they didn't 1/6
His only hope is to now show that mass murder and fake news is the winning ingredient. We can not allow this to happen. 2/6
In early 1940's the America First Committee (sound familiar?) and Senator Lindbergh didn't believe Britain could resist Hitler & wanted to turn their back on Europe. He was wrong then & Trump is wrong now.
Ukrainians have fought like Lions & shed blood for all our freedoms. 3/6
Contrary to lazy commentary Putin is not in a strong position. His economy is a year away from a crash, he has lost over 800k soldiers and his Army's equipment is decimated. Russia is not some world super power, the US and Europe dwarf it in nearly every measure. 4/6
It is a gangster state with a gangster leader. The West needs to send a clear message to the Kremlin that we aren't going to abandon Ukraine & we will stick with them as long as it takes for Russia to fail in it's illegal invasions. 5/6
Shiri Bibas and her two small children were taken hostage, held in captivity for over 500 days, murdered or otherwise allowed to perish, and their bodies used as leverage to secure the release of Palestinian criminals held in Israeli prisons.
Everything about this is disgusting and inhumane.
I look forward to the Palestinian propaganda arm trying to justify this.
Here are some genuine fake news that the Whitehouse now spouts: 1. We have given over double what Europe has to Ukraine. ❌ In fact Europe has given more. 1/3
Australia stands proudly with President Zelenskyy and the Ukrainian people.
The UK has provided stoic leadership, along with others, since the moment of Vladimir Putin’s barbaric invasion of Ukraine.
Congratulations to the people of Australia and @AlboMP on the occasion of Australia Day.
May your country continue to thrive, preserving its vibrant culture, diversity and strength of its unity.
Ukrainians are grateful for Australia’s support in our fight for freedom and for our shared dedication to democratic values and a rules-based international order. I wish all Australians peace, prosperity and well-being.
The New Zealand Labour Party says it will not join Australia, the UK and the US as part of AUKUS if returned to power at the next election in 2026
Party leader and ex-PM Chris Hipkins says if elected, he woud “restore New Zealand’s proudly independent foreign policy”
My fellow (non-boomer) Australians: I think we have to accept at some point we're afflicted by Stockholm Syndrome. There is a developed country not far away where the top marginal tax rate of 37% kicks in at $609K ($731K for couples) with property prices that look like this 👇
If Israel had followed the Albanese government’s advice and instituted an “immediate ceasefire” several months ago, Yahya Sinwar would still be alive today and Hamas would be back in control of Gaza. It is a good thing they did not.
Wise words on the cause of inflation from Milton Friedman: "Inflation is made in Washington because only Washington can create money...What produces it is too much government spending and too much government creation of money and nothing else."
Anniversaries of a mass terror attack should stand by themselves. That’s what the PM did on the 20th anniversary of September 11 in 2021. That’s what he should have done yesterday.
