Warhol and Koons represent a profound change in the artistic endeavor, from art as a pursuit of some creative vision or ambition, to art as a commercial product

Since art entered the Singularity very early (arguably first, and in the 19th century) - photography and the modern chemicals industry having “solved” art in a sense - the role of the artist changed, first to lone genius (exemplified by Picasso) and then to the artist as celebrity (also Picasso, especially in his later phases, Warhol, Lichtenstein, Hurst)

Now in the 21st century we have the artist as influencer (Bansky). The key here is to manage one’s brand image and reputation. The art itself is really secondary (Banksy isn’t famous for his art pieces, but rather his guerrilla style). The true art is curating one’s *performance* of being an artist.

I find this somewhat depressing. If the future under conditions of strong AI (which, again, art has effectively lived within for well over a century now) is to turn oneself into an actor, this isn’t a very optimistic vision for the future
