Happy Sukkot to my Jewish friends.
To my non-Jewish friends - this is just the contingent of police officers protecting just one Shul in Toronto. Grateful to them for being there.... shame on all of us that they have to be.
Shabbat Shalom
I have some thoughts!
Nikole Hannah-Jones interviewed me at the height of woke-1 to champion and virtue signal her “fight for every black child” and disparage and dismiss my fight for all NYC public school students to enjoy the rising tide that lifts all boats of academic rigor and meritocracy.
She thought my support of the Specialized High School Admission Exam, the SHSAT, was racist. I thought her school politics were deeply misguided, and well, quite racist.
Unlike Hannah-Jones I have nothing to walk back.
I knew then what she has just figured out that her identitarian race-based grievance project would not fix anything. And in fact, it has hurt all public school students. Not just in NYC—her Magnum Opus of racial grievance, The 1619 Project, is taught in schools across the country and its reasoning is used to dismantle and stop the creation of the kind of high school that her daughter ultimately chose—the one that finally taught her algebra.
NYC Public School students score lower on all academic metrics now than they did when her daughter started school—and we tax payers pay more for it. Enrollment continues to plummet while those in charge dumb down standards and hide results. So much of that is because any solution that challenged Hannah-Jones' race-baiting—endorsed by The Times and Democratic leaders alike—was verboten.
Like Hannah-Jones I have a HS junior. My two older kids have graduated from NYCPS and are in college and my youngest is in NYCPS elementary school. I have qualms with parts of their education but also many success stories. Can you get a great education in NYCPS? Yes. But you have to fight for it. And insisting on the schools that grade math homework is a start.
Knowing what your child is learning and mastering is a non-negotiable. Standardized tests help with that, but are a starting point only. Blaming phantom racists instead of understanding the role parents play was and is a lazy cop out.
There is still an effort–alive and well right now-to dismantle great schools like NYC’s specialized high schools because they use standardized admissions tests. The effort still relies on the same failed logic that Hannah-Jones has peddled for years. She insisted that kids like her daughter who did not score high enough on a test to gain admission were the victims of racism. But she refused to acknowledge that poor Asian kids whose parents had NONE of the resources that her daughter enjoyed (or should have enjoyed) (English speaking parents, resources to pay for prep classes, knowledge of how the system works, etc) were not racist oppressors—but kids willing to work hard and apply their smarts with parents that prioritized subject mastery and took the time to make sure their kids were actually learning.
Her daughter is right. She deserved much better. But it is not the cauldron of racist grievances that Hannah-Jones still cannot let go of that failed her daughter. It’s her daughter’s parents that did not figure out for NINE YEARS that their daughter was not learning enough.
New York City Public Schools should be among the best in the world because we have so many incredibly talented, smart and hard-working students that could and should learn more by being challenged more–and that means sorting kids into cohorts where they can rise to the level of their abilities and willingness to work. In other words “screening”—the exact project Hannah-Jones fought against for so long and which she has now relied on to rescue her daughter’s education.
You’re welcome Nikole. Your daughter’s chosen high school would not exist but for parents like me who fought so hard to keep screened schools.
Right is right. Wrong is wrong. In life, you must choose a side. You are either with the Tucker Carlson wing of the country or you are with the pro Israel wing of the country. You can’t be both. @JDVance
“We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim.” Elie Wiesel
Reminds me of the NPR interview with DSA spokeswoman who claimed that the US did not try diplomacy with Russia before helping Ukraine arm itself. They do not care about facts
I refuse to believe that @RoKhanna is as stupid as he comes across in this interview. He criticizes Israel for not negotiating with Hamas … ignoring the fact that Israel did negotiate with Hamas and that any point Hamas could have turned over the hostages and ended the war. Israel is blamed for Hamas’s nihilism and recalcitrance.
Farcworse he accuses Israel of killing 70,000 people … ignoring the fact that many of those killed were Hamas fighters.
He’s saying these things and accusing Israel of genocide because he thinks it’ll help him politically when he runs for president … and gets 2% of the vote in the New Hampshire primary before dropping out.
The cynicism is breathtaking
Holy shit... Wired reports that back in May, the U.S. Military was testing an experimental GPS jammer and and caused a civilian plane to crash into the side of a mountain, killing everyone on board.
He will be executed tomorrow he will be hanged. He’s just a child. Please help me to get the leaders to call the Islamic Republic to stop the execution.
My heart broke when I just watched the forced confession of this young boy on Iran’s state TV.
They tell him: “You are Mohareb.”
He asks: “What does that mean?”
He was so young, he didn’t understand that it means one thing in Islamic Republic:
execution
A 17-year-old boy, Shervin Bagherian, was arrested in Iran’s recent protest. Now in the middle of a war they are preparing to execute him.
His only crime was wanting a normal life. There is still time to speak up. Will you stand with me and be his voice before it’s too late?

The more I think Mamdani’s recent statements — the clearer they all become. He’s not speaking to Benjamin Netanyahu. He’s speaking to New York’s Jewish community, and the message is this: You aren’t safe here any longer.
Real talk. At some point, political journalism starts looking like celebrity journalism, even if it's Rolling Stone. The press just gave us a feature on Zohran Mamdani's love of soccer, his passion for rings, his fashion, favorite foods, favorite Taylor Swift songs, playlists, branding, and now glossy magazine profiles.
Meanwhile, kids are getting shot every day in our streets. Rape is up. New Yorker paid billions to bail out his spending, and I think management deserves at least as much reporting. No? Or what Taylor Swift songs he likes take precedent?
Real reporting would focus on his budget, the impact of forcing the Rent Guidelines Board to circumvent the law, the lack of a credible housing plan, the consequences of his tax agenda, why Black and Latino students continue to lag on state tests and remain underrepresented at specialized high schools, his public safety agenda, and his governing philosophy, rather than his accessories and aesthetic.
I understand that reporters need access, and that reality shapes coverage. But this kind of journalism fuels the idea that parts of the press are more interested in cultivating politicians they like than holding them accountable.
I’m very grateful that no one was seriously injured this morning at 26 Federal Plaza.
Let’s be clear: we want ICE off our streets, but there is absolutely no room for violence in the movement to protect our neighbors. None.
Like the people of Minneapolis, we are in the tradition of nonviolent civil resistance, for reasons moral and strategic. It’s both why we will win, and how we will win.
Thank you to law enforcement for responding to a very dangerous situation and defusing it.
Alas, Mr. Congressman, I'm not lying. And I started this line of questioning assuming you were telling the truth. I've written long essays on extremist Israeli violence in the West Bank. I know it happens. I was ready, at first glance, to believe it happened here. But it didn't. This wasn't Israeli violence. This was agitprop for your American audiences.
I said explicitly that I'm not familiar with the details of that area. It took a lot of effort for JPost to find out what it found out -- which was that it was a closed military zone only recently opened.
But if you'd coordinated your visit with Israeli authorities, this would have been sorted out from the start. Those soldiers weren't angry or aggressive, they seemed mostly just confused about the status of the area and how to handle your visit.
Because, you know, there was no coordination.
JPost suggests all that in the article you yourself shared.
And what of the violence? Your group had cameras -- a professional photographer and at least one bodycam -- yet you've produced no evidence that I've seen of the violence you claim to have experienced.
Remember that you claimed the violence was sufficient to demand that Netanyahu order the prosecution of those soldiers.
I've seen that sort of violence before; if you produce that footage, I'll join your demand for prosecution. That's not rhetoric. I really will, wholeheartedly.
But if you don't, I think it's safe to assume you blew up a small inconvenience caused by your own refusal to talk to Israelis.
In a similar vein, you used the word "detained" as if you were unlawfully held against your will -- and hide behind its second meaning, that you were a bit delayed in driving forward into the area. The first is on the spectrum of kidnapping crimes, the second is the sort of problem you'd encounter at the entrance to a federal building as you search your pockets for an ID. Which was it?
Anyway, you were angling for some domestic political brownie points, and congratulations, you got 'em.
"If you told me 80 years after the end of WWII, there would be a power on the planet...that openly avows the destruction of the Jewish people, that the world would wonder what to do. The answer is simple. Stop them. Stop them now!"

NY Times: RUN IT!!
Israel sent search-and-rescue teams to Venezuela. That's a documented fact.
The @nytimes reported on the international response while omitting Israel's rescue mission. Other major media outlets did the same. That's not a typo. It's not a factual dispute. It's an editorial choice. When the facts don't fit the narrative, the facts disappear.
That's why nobody trusts todays activist media especially when they report on Israel.
@NYCMayor@ZohranKMamdani calls AIPAC a “monster” that moves “dark money”.
This isn’t about “dark money.” It’s classic scapegoating of Jewish/ pro-Israel Americans exercising their rights. Legal, transparent advocacy gets demonized while real foreign influence gets a pass.
Jews aren’t a “monster.” We’re citizens defending our community and Israel, the one Jewish state against actual genocide threats and endless terror.
NYC deserves better than this divisive rhetoric from its Mayor.
Jewish New Yorkers already feel unsafe in schools, trains, busses, and on the street. These libels and scapegoating tactics will lead to more violence against Jews. The Mayor continues to be dangerous to the Jewish community and he doesn’t care! It’s all about his power growing! Wake up NY!!

Big embarrassment; Look at the body language. This is the UN representative, appointed by @antonioguterres went to Iran after the massacre, bowing multiple times to the regime officials, obeying the hijab she was forced to wear, while Iranian women, ripped that same hijab off in the streets, got arrested and killed.
Western woman have all the power of the free world behind her and she bows. Iranian women nothing but courage and the stand tall without obeying a barbaric law.
they'll say, “well, it's the law of the land, you have to respect it."
Sure. Slavery was the law of the land. Apartheid was the law of the land.
Bad laws don't deserve respect. Apartheid deserves to be deleted.
