What exactly is Ellis County’s Voter Approval Tax Rate???

After the bombshell admission that Ellis County can’t account for $20 MILLION of your dollars, the County’s fuzzy math scandal gets even worse!... The tax rate information keeps changing, and it just changed again!

First it was the new property tax revenue that kept changing, then it was the No New Revenue Rate,… and now it’s the Voter Approval Tax Rate (VATR) which magically changed… again!

The VATR is the rate at which local governments attempt to raise taxes so much that it is illegal unless voters approve that tax rate in an election. These elections often fail because voters do NOT want higher property taxes, which is why local governments often skirt state law by setting rates just BARELY below the Voter Approval Tax Rate, sometimes as little as 0.000x below the VATR.

Tax hiking politicians do NOT want voters to get to vote on property tax hikes!!

So, what exactly is Ellis County’s Voter Approval Tax Rate????...

We have no idea!!

Unfortunately, and indefensibly, Ellis County has put forth at least THREE different numbers for what the VATR is - in just the past nine days!:

1️⃣ The County’s original proposed budget, AND their amended proposed budget, shows a VATR of 0.280238

2️⃣ A slide presented by the Ellis County Tax Assessor Collector at the Commissioners Court meeting on Tuesday the 18th showed a VATR of 0.280685

3️⃣ Ellis County just published their NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING ON TAX INCREASE in the newspapers as required by state law, but it shows a VATR of 0.283796

IMPORTANT: The VATR that was presented at Commissioners Court when THEY VOTED to propose the tax rate DOES NOT MATCH the number that was published in the newspaper!

Unfortunately for Ellis County taxpayers, while the VATR is not known, what is known for a fact is that Ellis County has proposed to RAISE PROPERTY TAXES.

At this point, does anyone trust their math at all???

My constituents deserve better than governmental fuzzy math. They deserve the truth… and they deserve property tax CUTS, not property tax hikes from supposedly “Republican” County Commissioners.
