🚨BREAKING: Laura Helmuth has resigned as Editor-in-Chief of Scientific American after over four years in the role. During her tenure, she transformed @sciam from a widely respected, objective popular science magazine into a science-themed, woke political publication.
@YoucanAxel@skdh Negative, simple reprocessing (PUREX or otherwise) suffices. It's what France, Japan and others do with their spent LWR fuel. Canada's CANDU PHWRs can even skip that step due to the use of fast neutrons & need only natural uranium, not enriched.
There is a reason why we established a rule-based order in 1945, even though it has been far from perfect. The United Nations, especially the UNSC, are heavily flawed. In many if not most cases, where decisive questions were asked, the UNSC has been proven useless, and even when UN resolutions passed, they were frequently just ink on paper.
Yet, there were some universal rules which all sides have abided, because they were too much, even for this flawed system. Not changing borders by force and annexation of neighboring territories were some of them, especially by a nuclear power. Russia grossly violated this universal rule back in 2014 and the world stayed basically silent, inevitably leading to the events starting 2022. If not corrected it will launch a process which cannot be reversed. Countries across the globe will acquire nuclear weapons, because it is virtually the only effective mean to counter an aggressive neighbor. Ukraine might be the first country to do so, for good reason, but it certainly wouldn’t be the last.
Dozens of countries are just waiting and watching how the events will unfold in Ukraine. If Russia can get away with it, even partially, then all dams would break. It would be without any hyperbole the most consequential developments of our times, including all unpredictable consequences. No Isolationist country or government on this planet would be immune from those events. We are all into this.
@skdh Not just one group, but a range of interests ranging from anti-science & pro-degrowth ideologists to established (fossil fuel) interests.
Thinking of e.g. the groups protesting in the US years before TMI #2's unfortunate partial meltdown happened.
@AusConservation@NukeDaveSweeney You’ve had quite a long time to modernise your thinking about nuclear energy.

Gabon has fallen to a Free French coup. Last Vichy French supporters now surrendering in Libreville; Vichy governor has committed suicide. De Gaulle's forces now control colonies of French Equatorial Africa.
@Waffl3x@janwilmans Yeah, it is C where you have to free() allocated memory yourself. In C++ you got the destructor, etc. handling it.
If you're manually doing memory management in C++, you're just writing C-in-C++. Not that there's anything wrong with it, but it's not idiomatic C++.
Your reminder that promising to do something and actually doing so is very, very, but very different.
Fossil fuel CO2 emissions will set an all-time high in 2024, about 10% higher than at the time of the Paris Agreement deal.

Soviet Foreign Minister Molotov has arrived in Berlin, to discuss the future of the Nazi-Soviet pact. Stalin wants to know what Hitler plans for Europe in years to come.
