No one chooses to become a “high-acuity patient.” Michiganders deserve access to Michigan Medicine so we can be there when it matters most.
As a @umichmedicine physician, I find this statement deeply concerning because it overlooks the very real people and families who depend on this level of care every day. Healthcare decisions should be guided by patient need — not by reducing patients to numbers or financial calculations.
Having personally relied on this high-acuity care not long ago, this feels especially painful. There was a time when I genuinely did not know what my future would look like — whether I would fully recover, whether I would be able to continue the work I love, or even how different my life might have been without access to that level of care.
That is why this conversation is not abstract to me. My heart breaks for the patients and families who may one day face those same moments of fear and uncertainty and worry they may not be able to access the care they need when it matters most.

Thank you to the Women's Health Innovation Fund for funding our project "Revolutionizing Prenatal Care: Using AI to Bridge Gaps in Women's Health."
Our goal is to ensure every patient—regardless of background, language, or insurance—receives timely, comprehensible, and equitable communication about their prenatal care. The project also supports clinician efficiency and builds a scalable toolkit for expanding this approach across specialties.

AI has turned the doctor–patient dyad into a triad.
Patients and clinicians now both consult chatbots, sometimes with life-or-death consequences.
The new skill in medicine is learning to treat AI as a third participant in care. #MedEd
