Mainpuri just created an environmental first for India. 🌿🦆

• Sauj Jheel, Uttar Pradesh, was designated a Ramsar Site on 15 October 2026, taking India’s Ramsar tally to 103 and Uttar Pradesh’s to 14.

• With Sauj Jheel joining Saman Bird Sanctuary, Mainpuri becomes India’s only district with two Ramsar Sites, according to Uttar Pradesh’s Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife).

• Saman Bird Sanctuary, designated in 2019, is a seasonal oxbow wetland of the Gangetic floodplain, spread across about 526 hectares and vital for migratory waterbirds.

• Sauj Jheel is a shallow floodplain lake embedded in an agrarian landscape, strengthening ecological connectivity across the wider Ganga basin.

UPSC lens:

An increasing number of women are taking up entrepreneurship and establishing their own businesses.
Women’s entrepreneurship broadens economic participation by creating opportunities to earn, build assets and grow businesses.
It strengthens financial independence while expanding skills and access to resources.
Women-owned MSMEs: As of October 2026, ~3.69 crore registered MSMEs were women-owned, representing ~38% of all registrations.
Women in startups: By March 2026, over 1.07 lakh recognised startups had at least one-woman director or partner.
These accounted for approximately 48% of all recognised startups.

Climate history finds monsoon fluctuation footprints from sediment transport to farming adaptations

▶️ A new study has found that Indian Summer Monsoon fluctuations have, through the years, controlled lake hydrology, sediment transport, vegetation, sedimentary organic matter, microbial activity, and early farming adaptation in the Central Ganga Plain

▶️ This could help strengthen climate and agricultural adaptation, guide water security and wetland conservation, enhance disaster risk reduction and advance understanding of human-climate interactions

▶️ Scientists have been trying to address the long-standing question of how past climatic extremes influenced the evolution of human societies in the Indian subcontinent. The rise and decline of the Indus Valley Civilization have been widely linked to changes in the Indian Summer Monsoon.
