#KAPSARC in collaboration with the Saudi Electricity Company (@ALKAHRABA) and the Saudi Energy Efficiency Center (@SeecSaudi) conducted the first large-scale randomized controlled trial on household electricity consumption in Saudi Arabia. The experiment sent out one SMS per month to 62,750 households over a period of six months, sharing practical energy-saving tips and comparing each household’s electricity use with that of its neighbors.
The findings reveal that combining peer comparisons with energy-saving tips reduced household electricity consumption by about 2%.
This demonstrates how simple, low-cost behavioral nudges can effectively complement traditional policy tools, even in subsidized energy markets, yielding substantial gains in fuel savings.
