"Today, Friday, June 19, 2026, we honor Juneteenth National Independence Day — a day to celebrate Black culture, history, resilience, and freedom.

Although the Emancipation Proclamation was issued in 1863, it was not until June 19, 1865, that Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to enforce the freedom of the last remaining enslaved African Americans. This historic day marks the full realization of emancipation in the United States.
