1: FEC not Buhari approved a company called Nigeria Air via CAC

2: ICRC is the midwife of Nigeria Air not Federal Ministry of Aviation

3: Nigeria Air is not creating any monopoly.

5: Nigeria Air will create jobs.

Apologies for the flight disruptions at the Abuja airport today which affected other flight operations throughout the country . It was caused by an incident at the Abuja runway involving an aircraft which made it impossible for other aircrafts to land for some time.

This underscores the urgent need for the Abuja second runway and my first task when I came to office as Aviation Minister was to secure the land from the indigenes. Just two weeks ago, the contractors have moved to site to begin construction of the Abuja second runway.

Trust me I am a fan of “protectionism” and I also believe it is one of the ideologies that PBAT will implement. Protectionism simply means protection of local manufacturers against foreign competition so they can thrive.
But the statement by BUA chairman exposed my fears. In protecting the local manufacturers, they tend to engage in Price gouging.

Price gouging is an act or instance of charging customers too high a price for goods or services, especially when demand is high and supplies are limited. It is the practice of increasing the prices of goods, services, or commodities to a level much higher than is considered reasonable or fair.

I suspect the same for some agricultural produce. Yes we ain’t producing enough but a bag of rice shouldn’t be remotely close to N40,000. When we talk about inflation at 24%, Price gouging is part of the hidden burden on the economy.

In USA we have 37 states that have signed into law anti price gouging bills. Just last year, at the height of USA inflation struggles, it became evident that the oil companies were engaging in price gouging. The US senate simple introduced the “Gas Price Gouging Prevention Act”.

Yes we must protect our local manufacturers, but we must also protect the sanctity of the economy and by extension the vulnerable.

There is an overarching need for a commodity exchange Board and an anti price gouging law.

With a commodity exchange board, a minimum price is set but it also help to check mate unfettered profiteering by making the process of commodity sale transparent and competitive.
