Today in London, I had the honour of delivering a presentation on Nigeria 2027 Elections: Electoral Integrity amid a deepening security crisis at the Chatham House Africa Programme Roundtable.

I discussed the 2026 Electoral Act and ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening electoral integrity, alongside security investments, accountability mechanisms, the State Police Bill, and the growing challenge of disinformation.

On security, I highlighted progress in national response efforts, including increased defence and security funding in the 2026 budget. The legislature’s role extends beyond appropriation to robust oversight, ensuring that resources translate into measurable outcomes through sustained scrutiny of implementation, a priority of the 10th Assembly.

On State Police, I addressed concerns raised by citizens, outlining key safeguards in the bill, including merit-based recruitment, national standards, independent oversight commissions, and legislative controls. I also underscored that a highly centralised policing structure cannot deliver the speed and local intelligence required across Nigeria’s scale and complexity.

Nigeria’s democracy is still maturing. Progress is the result of continuous institutional reform and sustained civic participation. With commitment and resolve, I am confident we will achieve a more secure, sustainable, and prosperous nation.
