The publication of the energy – electricity, market, bulk supply and open access regulation of 2026 that allows producers to rival Kenya power is likely to end Kenya power monopoly and usher in other players.
The training ended with a call to invest in regenerative, nature-based solutions within Kenya's water towers with the aim or earning carbon credits amongst other benefits from the water tower ecosystem
However, restoration efforts since 2022, particularly indigenous tree planting in riparian zones - have helped recover 930 km of surface rivers. Moreover, areas with higher soil carbon and less intensive farming were found to better withstand floods and droughts.
In a previous finding by the university, there was a stark decline in river networks, with total river length shrinking from 7,000 km in the 1960s to 4,000 km in 2019.
The training that was held at Strathmore University dwelt much on the True Value Accounting (TVA) of the natural resources within the water towers and how Journalists can do data journalism stories to showcase the resourcefulness of the water towers.
The training analyzed food and agriculture systems in the Mau Forest Complex, Cheranganyi Hills, and Loita Hills, which provide critical services like water regulation, soil conservation, and biodiversity support.
