My takeaway from BACKROOMS' success (and MASTER OF THE UNIVERSE likely bombing) is that young people want THEIR IP made into movies, not the IP of their parents' generation.
BARBIE is an exception, and studios misunderstood why it succeeded when so many legacy sequels failed.
SCARY MOVIE will top the box office this wknd but a real battle could be brewing for 2nd, 3rd & 4th place, depending on 1) how much BACKROOMS drops, 2) how much desire there is for MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE. Some are saying OBSESSION *could* hit $30M
@Bruhhhhhhhiiii Nah, the original post tagged RDJ and their film studio, and was posted about multiple times while emphasizing it's a "surprise". I think people were in the right to expect a little more. Not a trailer, but something with some substance.
You probably shouldn't publicly tease an announcement/reveal if the entire public can't experience it.
They never released the CinemaCon trailer publicly, but never teased it either, so that's fine. Teased this multiple times, only SXSW attendees can experience it, less fine.
@WatercoolerFFW I was not expecting a trailer, but RDJ was tagged in the initial post, so I was expecting something more movie related than a pop-up coffee shop
Like a Death Star attacked by indie rebels, #TheMandalorianAndGrogu is crashing & burning on 2nd weekend at US #BoxOffice, after grossing just 6.5M on LOWEST 2nd FRI for #StarWars films under #Disney, shocking -80.8% drop from FRI Opening Day (vs #SOLO’s 8.1M, -77%)!, falling to #3 yesterday below both #OBSESSION & #Backrooms.
Once again, even last year’s #MemorialDay release #TheFinalReckoning (7.5M, -69.7%) did better, despite facing family juggernaut #LiloAndStitch and having -443 less theatres than Grogu!
GROGU hits a 118.9M cume in the US.
Eyeing a 22M-25M 2nd 3-day weekend & a 73%-69% drop domestically
It's also becoming clear that all the red tape Disney imposes on its creators is preventing them from making movies that really resonate with audiences in 2026.
Disney's biggest success stories of the past decade all come from strong creatives with a lot of control and vision
Star Wars had the perfect opportunity for a new creative and narrative direction after THE LAST JEDI, but Disney took the wrong lessons from that movie (and SOLO), and instead doubled down on the same stories, aesthetics, and time period for a decade longer than they should have.
Far from the disaster people are making it out to be. It's a generally inoffensive and safe Star Wars movie, for better and worse.
I don't think it will hurt or help the Star Wars brand at all, but Grogu will become a household name (if he isn't already).
Finally got to watch #TheMandalorianAndGrogu and liked it. All of the criticisms levied at it are accurate, but also exaggerated. What the movie lacks in narrative and character, it makes up for in its pulpy action and amazing visuals (might be the best-looking Star Wars movie).
#SpiderNoir unleashes the full spectrum of Nic Cage; really makes you believe Ben Riley is equal parts gritty detective & Looney Tune. The show oozes style, completely relishing in the noir genre. It's a slower series, but this pacing helps immerse you better in the world & genre
I would have to imagine that an $80M domestic / $160M WW opening would be considered a success for this movie. To me, this signals that the Star Wars brand is still strong enough to survive so much online negativity, mid-reviews, and poor marketing.
The new hope for Lucasfilm/Disney’s #MandalorianAndGrogu is that the Jon Favreau directed, Dave Filoni EP’ed and co-written feature will meet or exceed its $80M 4-day tracking in North America.
Global outlook is $160M WW, $80M of that from a 98% footprint offshore. The only territory not going this weekend is Korea.

Do you think the people crashing out about Mixtape for not having gameplay also get mad at cookbooks for not having a narrative? Should no cookbook ever get a 10/10 because none of them have a good story?
