Closed out my 23rd year of teaching in higher ed (and my 12th @ShenandoahU) with the amazing students in my Civil War Memory and Practice of History classes. These wonderful students have been such a joy to teach.

After five years of research, writing, development, and design it was a great honor to unveil a new walking tour at Cool Spring yesterday--Slavery & Parker's Retreat.
It was a real treat to kick off the 20th Virginia Forum this afternoon by leading a walking tour that explored slavery & freedom in Winchester during the Civil War. Excited to welcome 200+ historians to @ShenandoahU tomorrow and Saturday.

Enjoyed recording an episode for Shenandoah County Historical Society’s podcast hosted by Hank Zimmerman about some themes explored in my book Slavery & Freedom @floridapress earlier today. Episode will air in early February.
Spent the last class of the fall semester @ShenandoahU with students in my US History I survey class in the Winchester National Cemetery to explore the Civil War's cost, impact on families, and its legacies--a powerful ending to a semester with a terrific bunch of students.

Today was a special day—the dedication of ten historical markers @ShenandoahU highlighting aspects of SU’s 150 years. This started as a class project with my students in January 2024.
Enjoyed speaking at the Carnegie Library & Music Hall on Sat. about some of the themes explored in my recent book General Philip H. Sheridan: Life, War, and Memory @routledgebooks. The audience was fantastic. Also, many thanks to Jon-Erik Gilot for the tour of the Espy GAR Post.
So very honored that MCWI @ShenandoahU received a grant today from the Community Foundation of the Northern Shenandoah Valley’s Boxley-Fox Endowment Fund to support the creation of a guided tour focused on Cool Spring’s links to the Underground RR & the enslaved at the Retreat.

Had an amazing turnout for my tour this morning about the construction of Ft. Collier and the Civil War’s impact on the Stine family. Doubly delighted that three of my wonderful history students from @ShenandoahU attended.
