That £221 hit landing on tens of millions of households is almost entirely down to one thing. Ofgem confirmed it this morning, with electricity rising just 5% while gas does nearly all the lifting

The UK still burns gas to heat the majority of homes, and the current global situation has pushed wholesale prices to where they are today

In the same three months that prices climbed, energy companies posted £26.2 billion in profit. £3 billion of that came from UK operations alone

That's £102 of profit per UK household in a single quarter

The government paused the £500 million energy debt relief scheme on 31 March, weeks before this rise was confirmed

UK household energy debt is now heading toward £7 billion by the end of the year, with 4.35 million homes already behind on their bills, up 70% since January 2022
