Enable rather than do for. Get to know what matters to people, what’s meaningful and what you can help them to achieve. People fear the risk of losing their independence - if only we, as health care professionals, were as scared of that risk as we are of falls.

Thanks to those who have responded. Still looking for 3 #ForensicOTs to participate in my research project. It’s an area with paucity of research so help to start to build on this would be appreciated 🙏🏻 please retweet or let any forensic friends know ☺️
Calling Forensic OT’s B6 & above with 2+ years’ experience to participate in my research project for MSc advanced OT.

Over the next 2 years our #PrimaryCare team are aiming to reduce health inequalities for people with learning disabilities &/or autism. We want to create a working group of stakeholders to support us on this mission & we'd love to hear from you if you would like to get involved!
Every year in my school reports I wrote "I'm not very good at PE & Games" "I would like to be better at PE & Games". Not a single person picked this up and I was 36 before I found a love for physical activity. So many lost/wasted years #physicalactivity
Building positive attitudes to sport and physical activity in children from an early age can help them to feel more motivated, confident and able to get active throughout their life.

Yes! 👏 Learning disabled people want to engage in sport - it is a source of community and belonging. Creating and supporting opportunities for participation is a matter of #occupationaljustice
@McMeTheOT Your research findings echo are own. There is no lack of interest in sport, just a lack of opportunities to participate. It's time to level the playing field.
There is often a perception that people with learning disabilities aren't interested or motivated to play sport. My MSc research in this area suggested the contrary - people wanted to participate but faced barriers in the systems around them which prevented them from doing so
People with a learning disability belong in sport.
We make sport accessible, so people with a learning disability can play.
@mencap_charity's #LearningDisabilityWeek2024 theme is Do you see me?
We want to see a world that includes people with a learning disability in sport.
Great to see @mencap_charity and @BigIssue having a conversation about the fear that so often lies behind prejudice and stigma. If we want people to challenge their prejudices we have to create a space where they can identify and acknowledge them first.
Research by @mencap_charity has revealed a gulf of understanding around learning disabilities in the UK.
Around 1.5 million people in the UK have a learning disability, yet a large proportion of the country can't even define what it is. 🤷♀

Occupational participation is fundamental to physical and mental health and yet the prison environment is designed to create occupational deprivation. Improving the health of those in prison must include improving #occupationaljustice
Many people spend most of the day ‘banged up’, which means movement out of cells to exercise, socialise, or attend work and education – all critical factors in sustaining a healthy mind – is all too often compromised.
