WHY CAN’T PEOPLE SEE WHAT IS RIGHT IN FRONT OF THEIR FACES?

The recent allegations against a well-known preacher have shocked many people. The accusations are grievous, disturbing, and heartbreaking if proven true. My heart aches for the victims, for the churches that trusted him, and for the reproach this brings upon the name of Christ.

What has troubled me almost as much as the allegations themselves is the question they have forced me to ask:

Why can’t people see what is right in front of their faces?

This is not the first time that warning signs have been ignored.

Fifteen years ago, I publicly raised concerns about this man’s direction. My concern was not based upon rumors, personality conflicts, or envy. It was based upon observable decisions and his willingness to blur biblical lines in music, his growing acceptance of fellowships that many of us had long believed were spiritually dangerous, and a pattern of compromise that should have caused discerning Christians to stop and ask hard questions.

Instead, many chose to overlook those concerns.

Why?

Because he was gifted.

He was an engaging preacher.

He was a talented musician.

He could sing.

He had charisma.

People enjoyed hearing him.

In many circles, he occupied a unique place within the Independent Fundamental Baptist movement. As one of the most widely recognized Black preachers on major IFB platforms, many churches were eager to have him. That visibility gave him tremendous influence, and it also made many people hesitant to question concerns that should have been examined more carefully. Rather than testing everything by Scripture, too many allowed prominence, popularity and a fear of being called prejudice to silence discernment.

In many circles, gifting became more important than discernment.

I was told I was being too critical. Others insisted those issues “weren’t that important.” Some even suggested that separating over music and fellowship was extreme.

Today, many of those same people are standing before their churches having to do a deep dive into previous exposure and much damage control.

This should cause every one of us to examine how we evaluate spiritual leaders.

The Bible repeatedly warns us that compromise rarely remains confined to one area of life. Small departures from biblical conviction have a way of preparing the heart for larger departures. While not every person who compromises in one area will fall into gross immorality, compromise weakens the guardrails that God has established for our protection.

When someone repeatedly chooses to ignore clear biblical principles in one area, it should never be dismissed as insignificant.

God tells us,

“A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump.”

Compromise has a way of spreading.

Our generation has become enamored with talent.

We celebrate personalities.

We excuse warning signs because someone can hold a crowd, preach with passion, sing beautifully, or build a following.

But God has never measured a man primarily by his ability.

He measures him by his character.

The tragedy is that many Christians have become better judges of talent than they are of holiness.

We are often impressed by what God says should never impress us.

A platform should never become a substitute for proven character.

Popularity is not spirituality.

Influence is not integrity.

Ability is not holiness.

The lesson here is bigger than one individual.

Every church member, every pastor, and every young preacher should determine to value biblical conviction over personality, discernment over popularity, and holiness over giftedness.

If we ignore obvious compromises because we enjoy someone’s abilities, we should not be surprised when greater problems eventually surface.

The question is not whether someone can preach.

The question is whether his life consistently demonstrates the character God requires.

A public platform requires public scrutiny. Crossroads Baptist Church had a Friday night service that is blowing people's minds that have known Bro. Baldwin for decades.

Here is the question: How far is a well-known preacher that has enormous influence over our young people allowed to drift away from the old paths before it's OK to say something? And before anyone asks me "Did you call Bro. Baldwin...?" my answer is “no.” Am I supposed to ask him if the video is real? To double check to make sure it is not AI?There's nothing to talk about. The video has already been viewed over 20K times in just a few days. The word is out. The secret is out. Now people know.

A preacher that is known far and wide and invited in to preach to our young people should openly and boldly announce when they make a major shift away from what they have always been.

I am not talking about their right to do as they wish, or as they see fit; I'm talking about an obligation to declare it so pastors and churches are not blindsided by early morning text messages and social media posts revealing that their church is NOTHING like it once was. That their church is NOTHING like the churches they are preaching in and that their church is NOTHING like what they portray themselves to be. I'm getting weary of the switch and bait happening in our pulpits. You think you're getting one thing, and you're actually getting something completely different.

It is a free country; you can do what you want to and be what you want to. As an Independent Baptist, you can paint your steeple purple with orange polka dots for all I care. But to go to conservative, solid, old-fashion Baptist churches that are trying to hold the line, and pretend to be like them when you CLEARLY are not, that is just wrong and it cannot be allowed to continue unchallenged.

To stand on the platforms of churches and challenge their young people to stand in the old paths when your church looks like a nightclub on Friday night is beyond comprehension. It is indefensible. It is heartbreaking.

One thing we can learn from this; in the future, before you invite a man to come preach for you, no matter how long you've known him, you've got to vet him all over again. Go look at his church's livestreams. People change. Their churches change. Their ministry philosophy changes. Their position on a host of issues change. Their music changes. But for some reason, they do not feel the need to tell you.
