@piersmorgan, not one of your guests explained the true, factual and PROVABLE reason for the 1993 settlement: Michael faced both a criminal trial and a civil trial. Clearly, a criminal trial is significantly more important as you stand to lose your freedom - your life, essentially. Michael was ordered to give a deposition in the civil case. However, in doing so his constitutional right to a fair trial would have been entirely compromised as defending himself in the civil litigation required him to reveal his defence of the allegations against him. This would give the prosecution on the criminal side invaluable insight into Michael’s defence and allow them to build their case around it. Michael’s team lost FOUR separate motions to simply pause the civil proceedings and allow the criminal investigation/proceedings to conclude first. Michael wanted to fight the allegations in court. Even the Chandler family admitted that it was in their interests to force the civil trial to go ahead of the criminal. At that point, the only option available to Michael was to settle the civil case so that the criminal investigation could continue fairly. You cannot legally settle a criminal case nor can you prevent anyone cooperating with a criminal investigation by settling with them so even after the civil settlement, the criminal investigation continued for several months. The ONLY reason it stopped was because the Chandlers refused to cooperate. They were in the strong position of already having the money and also being able to help get an alleged paedophile jailed. They had no interest whatsoever in pursuing the allegations because all they had wanted from the start was the payout. Michael was in a catch 22: don’t settle the civil and do the deposition and severely compromise your chances of a fair criminal trial or settle the civil and focus your efforts on defending against criminal charges.
