I won the Abebi award with an essay that has haunted me for years. I feel a bit unburdened to finally share this with the world. I couldn’t have asked for a better way to start the year. 🥹

The daughter of the Nigerian president can get a million dollar condo in New York and be free to be queer while her mates in Nigeria have to not only hide their sexuality for fear of being killed, they are also suffering in poverty. Their youthful lives being sucked away slowly.
The rapist could be seen on camera doing the act and they can still be acquitted based on a legal technicality.
Court finding a not guilty verdict does not always mean the accused did not commit the offence.
There is an Ifa passage that explains “Life, like the labyrinth of a woven basket” and i thought about how we have to constantly carry life on our backs.
I hope that this image is enough to depict that.

Auster to Coetzee in ‘Here and Now’:
“a better understanding of the aesthetic impulse in human beings, that the best argument for the importance of art lies precisely in its uselessness, that we are most deeply and powerfully human when we do things for the pure pleasure
Not only is he an alleged abuser, he is chuck full of bullshit. From inappropriate comments to just absolute errant nonsense. He is the reason I will never ever buy the rubbish mantra of separating the artist from their art. Haven’t listened to his music in YEARS.
When I was 18/19 I was absolutely obsessed with Brymo. Used to DM him all the time. One time I came back from a trip from Cotonou and drove straight to Freedom Park because he was performing.
Thank God for prefrontal cortex development. That man is not okay.
Maybe if the Ooni of Ife had sponsored children from Ife to the International Mathematics Olympiad instead of using that money to buy a car and give chieftaincy title to a paedophile WHO RAPES CHILDREN, those grumbling wouldn't feel so bad about watching Igbo children win awards
Two weeks ago, @WegandaReview published my first personal essay of the year. Bits and glimpses of what have been awkward, yet fascinating, months in (and out of) med school.
Note VIII for Ifeloluwa. Lupe said, "You'll live forever." Live for all of us, man. Live for all of us.
Always get a sense of overwhelming uselessness and helplessness whenever I see posts about kidnap victims because it appears no matter the outrage, the people whose job it is to protect and secure do not see the need to do that nor do they appear to see a need for accountability. Just dead silence on the matter and business as usual. Jokes and dinners celebrating their achievements whilst several families go through the mental torture of imagining the worst happening to their children for 50days. I cannot even begin to imagine how harrowing the experience is for those that have been taken and those left behind.
This man wasn’t doing as great before his prison sentence.
Now, post prison time, this man who went to jail for sexually assaulting and abusing a child is getting gifts and accolades.
It’s almost as if he is being compensated for the having faced consequences (which are mild in my opinion) for his vile CRIMINAL behaviour.
2 weeks ago, I broke down 22 songs on Spotify's Top 50 chart—filtering for relevance—in a songwriting analysis experiment to confirm prevailing thoughts on the rut in Afropop. The result was as expected: too much lamba. Latest for @takingCustody
