Calling out what he described as misleading statements, Golding pressed the minister on the true cost of restoring Jamaica’s power grid. While Vaz confirmed a US$150 million loan from cat bond funds to JPS, he failed to explain what happened to the remaining US$200 million previously said to be required.

I am very concerned about how the Government is going about restoring shelter for our Jamaican brothers and sisters in the affected parishes. We are three weeks away from Christmas and this special season will not be merry for a lot of Jamaicans in thw western end of the island. We should have seen, a greater push for community groups, joined with the engineering team from the JDF, to drive repairs and reconstruction of homes in the affected areas. We cannot just wait until the container homes arrive in the island. Most of these citizens will not be able to purchase these container homes unless they are contributors to the NHT. So, there must be other approaches to restoring the dignity of our people who used round-robins, partners and other such creative financing to build their homes over time. In the last election, the PNP had put forward a creative and transformational approach to deal with land tenure in Jamaica and that was to see the time that one could claim for government land that they occupy, being reduced from 60 to 25 years. This approach is needed in parishes like Westmoreland where there is a major problem with land ownership. Six weeks have elapsed since Hurricane Melissa. It is now action time. Camera time is over!😒
