We discussed how the government’s milk cooler distribution initiative will help dairy farmers in Kiambu improve milk quality, enhance processing, and reduce post-harvest losses.

The government remains committed to supporting dairy farmers and creating sustainability in the livestock sector.

Why Vaccinating Livestock is the RIGHT thing to do:

1. Disease Control: Will prevent diseases like foot-and-mouth (FMD) and PPR, reducing death and economic losses

2. Animal Welfare: Will ensure livestock are healthier and don’t suffer

3. Increased Productivity: Will boost growth and reproduction leading to more quality meat, milk, egg and leather production

4. Food Safety and Trade: Will ensure we don’t eat food from sick animals and will open up markets for export of our meat, milk and eggs.

At @kalromkulima Headquarters, I underscored significant milestones propelling our agriculture sector, which contributes 21.8% to GDP and employs 40% of Kenyans, in alignment with our Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).

With favorable rainfall and subsidized fertilizer distribution, crop and livestock productivity has soared, reducing import bills and enhancing farmers' incomes.

Under the Edible Oils Promotion Project, the Ministry has distributed 556 metric tons of sunflower seeds to mitigate import costs. Additional crops like canola, coconut, sesame, and oil palm are part of this initiative to achieve self-sufficiency in edible oils.

We are augmenting livestock productivity through increased forage and feed production, improved breeding programs, and expanded livestock insurance.

We are fortifying meat export markets by combating livestock diseases. We are addressing threats such as Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) and Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) through a planned mass vaccination campaign. This ensures safe meat, milk, and other products, while adhering to global food safety standards.

The absence of such interventions could lead to livestock fatalities, food shortages, loss of income for farmers, and a decline in international trade due to non-compliance with global food safety standards.

As we approach International Minorities Rights Day on December 18, under the theme “One Kenya for All,” we joined the Yaaku community in Mukogodo Forest, Laikipia County, today for a tree planting event, where we planted over 5,000 trees.

I also took this opportunity to brief the community, whose primary source of livelihood is livestock, on the government’s programs aimed at enhancing livestock production. These include the National Vaccination Program, which protects animals against diseases while ensuring access to international markets, Animal Identification and Traceability System (ANITRAC), which will enhance livestock security and unlock more economic opportunities and apiculture.

Without these interventions, farmers risk losing livestock to disease, facing food shortages, declining incomes, and missing out on international trade opportunities due to non-compliance with global standards.

We are also expanding Kenya’s meat export markets by tackling disease threats such as Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) and Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR). To this end, a nationwide mass vaccination campaign is scheduled to begin early in 2025.

This effort will not only protect our livestock but also ensure the production of high-quality leather, safe meat, milk, and other products that meet global food safety standards.2/3

Today, at KARLO headquarters in Loresho, I joined CS @DrAndrewkaranja and key stakeholders from the livestock sector to address the media during a breakfast meeting. I reaffirmed the State Department for Livestock’s commitment to strengthening key value chains, including milk cooling systems, the dairy industry, leather production, livestock restocking, and the upcoming ANITRAC program. 1/3

Earlier this year, I had the privilege of documenting the pilot vaccination of livestock against PPR & FMD in Kitui & Embu counties - a highly successful exercise that received positive feedback from farmers &sector players.

The main vaccination program set for 2025 focuses solely on protecting livestock health, improving productivity, & ensuring food safety. Unfortunately, misinformation about methane gas emissions &Bill Gates' agendas has overshadowed this vital initiative.

How I wish we could stick to facts and work together for a stronger, healthier livestock sector! Hii Kenya we are also our own enemies!
