Copper Worth R12.6 Million Seized in Johannesburg:

A multidisciplinary law enforcement team, including SAPS Crime Intelligence, Interpol, Border Police and private security partners, seized suspected stolen copper worth more than R12.6 million during an intelligence-driven operation at City Deep, Johannesburg.

The operation followed information from Zambian authorities about the hijacking of three trucks transporting copper. Investigators found that trucks with false Tanzanian registration plates and fraudulent customs documents were allegedly used to move approximately 121 tonnes of copper into South Africa through the Beitbridge Border Post.

On 18 June 2026, police seized 26 bundles of copper in City Deep. Investigations revealed that the copper’s original serial numbers had been deliberately removed to conceal its origin.

No arrests have been made yet, but investigations are continuing as authorities pursue those linked to the suspected transnational copper-smuggling syndicate.
