How do you think R&D companies work? It takes a lot of people to make stuff like that. Each person has an area of expertise from the servos to the micro chips to operate these. Elon probably did not have much of his personal design in to the robots maybe just how he wanted it to work but he has a lot of design ideas in the rockets even bad ones like he wanted the tip more pointy just because a movie called the dictator lol.
