From Kristof's oped: "A central lesson of post-World War II military interventions is to beware of leaders glibly celebrating their missions accomplished. Toppling a government is invariably easier than ensuring a better one."
Several contradictory things are simultaneously true:
1. Maduro was an oppressive, unpopular and illegitimate ruler, disastrous for his country and the region.
2. Using the US to remove him may have been equally illegitimate.
3. Venezuela would be better off with a new government under the opposition's Edmundo Gonzalez (who probably won the presidential election but is now exiled).
4. It's not clear that Maduro will be replaced by Gonzalez. Maduro's VP is still apparently in power, as are other regime figures and the Cubans who back them.
5. As we've seen in Iraq and Libya, it can be easier to topple a leader than to establish a new government; sometimes you get a worse leader, or Somalia-style chaos.
Trump admits to taking more aspirin than his docs recommend: “They say aspirin is good for thinning out the blood, and I don’t want thick blood pouring through my heart. I want nice, thin blood pouring through my heart. Does that make sense?”
What could possibly go wrong! (2/6)

One of the most underreported stories of 2025 is that Trump is the first President ever to create electricity shortages on purpose. He is illegally canceling solar and wind, causing layoffs and price spikes, and the media is like “wow what a showman that guy is!”
I want to raise a few issues with this ...
- The unemployment rate was 4.6% in Nov 2025.
- There are 982,000 more unemployed people in Nov 2025 than in Jan 2025.
- There are 271,000 fewer federal government employees.
- 982,000 > 271,000. More than 3 times more unemployed.
This isn't complicated. No one can deny the Russians helped elect Trump and he is compromised. When Republicans follow Trump, they are compromised.
The Republican Party is a functional asset of the Russian Federation. This is the legacy of @LeaderJohnThune, @JohnCornyn, @SenatorWicker, @LindseyGrahamSC.
They will be remembered as the Republicans leaders who betrayed America out of loyalty to Trump.
Yep.
You can either be an individualist, in which case modern people aren't responsible for slavery or genocide.
Or you can be a collectivist, and claim that your blood gives you a special connection to a plot of land. But then you own the deeds of your ancestors.
Hi Folks, So happy "Our investigation developed proof beyond a reasonable doubt that President Trump engaged in a criminal scheme to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election and to prevent the lawful transfer of power" day to all who celebrate.
@christopherrufo@Noahpinion That might make sense in a very different media environment. When a President is trending Venezuela (or Mussolini, take your pick), you apply pressure at all points of contact. From a purely consequentialist POV, BTW.
