This evening I attended a Public Meeting on the development of the Canal as an the amenity which the Grand Canal potentially offers for residents in @Portobello etc. It was organised @ivanabacik Bacik and her local Cllrs incl. Dermot Lacey.

My first observation was the level of interest in the development of the Canal as an amenity. The venue was overflowing with many standing inside and outside the hall.

Representatives for Waterways Ireland gave a great presentation and it is clear, despite budgetary constraints, how passionate they are about improving the Canal and ambitious plans for the development & completion of the Greenways.

Residents had quite the a number of queries, concerns suggestions including concerns about anti social behaviour and shared walkways/cycle lanes- where there isn’t enough space for shared usage. and where walkers are finding motorised scooters and in some cases cyclists representing a danger for the safety of walkers - it should be said that another dedicated cycle lane is available around areas where there is no space.

The was also a very positive contribution on increasing activity on the water itself and the promotion of small commercial enterprises to complement the Waterways.

An excellent meeting attended by @chrisandrews64.

On another note the meeting was hosted in the wonderful Charlemont Community Centre which is a wonderful community resource. Thr Women’s Group in Charlemont continue to run wonderful initiatives in the Centre incl breakfast clubs for you children, after school activities, fitness, looking after residents and the elderly. I was struck by the level of commitment of committee. It is true that not all heroes wear capes.

Meath County Council Receives €10.5m in Funding for Active Travel and Greenway Projects

Meath County Council is pleased with the recent allocation of €10.5 million by the National Transport Authority (NTA) for Active Travel and Greenway projects in 2026. This investment is dedicated to the development of walking and cycling projects that offer safe, sustainable and healthy transport options to communities around the country.

In total, €10 million was provided to Meath County Council under the Active Travel Investment Grants to advance 35 projects across the county.

Highlights include:
✅ €4,428,800 for the Circular Road to Martha's Bridge project in Navan
✅ €1,030,000 for the Trim Road Phase 2 Solstice to Athlumney
✅ €1,000,000 for the Bettystown Eastham Road Cycle Facilities
✅ €550,000 for the Newtown Road Walking Facilities in Trim
✅ €260,000 for the Dunboyne Cycle Network

In addition to this, €500,000 was also granted through other NTA funding streams for the Bus Stop Enhancement Programme.
