Those of you who cannot fathom that Christopher Nolan is using trickery and a Trojan Horse approach to The Odyssey have already forgotten that Nolan made the Prestige which is all about hiding the truth in layers of deception. He made Inception which was about getting past someone’s psychological barriers to plant an idea in their unconscious. He made The Dark Knight in which Batman pretends to be a vilain so that the city can be preserved. He made Memento in which a man tricks himself into believing something.

There is nothing straightforward about Nolan’s Odyssey.

Honestly, I loved it.

While there are details I would have wanted to change to make it perfect, and while I am not convinced that he is intentionally trying to subvert the transgender issue, Nolan's Odyssey is a completely legitimate and powerful adaptation that as a whole rises above the level of its flaws.

If the conservative keepers of our myths can no longer retell the stories in a way that resonates with the experiences and idioms of our own moment, if they are unable to rise above the level of cranks and scolds and partisan lackies, then the culture created by those myths is already dead, pinned down on cheap printer paper and ready to rot in our ugly museums until the next world wonders at our self-destruction.
