Part 2

Q: Why law?

"My father recommended it to me, and I always listened to him. I dreamed of becoming an international lawyer. Acting came by chance. After graduation, I started working in a law firm: twelve hours sitting in front of a computer. It wasn't for me; I needed to move, and I was depressed. I remembered that at university they recommended drama courses to improve our body language: I signed up, then took private acting lessons. I thought it was a hobby. The auditions came along."

Q:What's the Turkish television system like?

"Very tough. You work 16, 18 hours a day: you sleep four and then go back to set. Every week you shoot 150-minute episodes, you become a war machine. It's a Darwinian system: those who can't cope disappear, those who stay become solid. I was young and bold back then. After DayDreamer, which was also broadcast in Italy, I went on vacation to Naples with my father. It was 2019. In front of the hotel, on the seafront, everything stopped for seven days: the fans wouldn't leave, not even at night. I went out with my father and we spent five hours taking photos. The vacation became a continuous meet-and-greet (laughs). That's when I realized how much I was loved."

Q:So did you decide to move to Italy?

"I arrived for Sandokan five years ago. Then the pandemic broke out and I stayed in Rome. In the meantime, the series was postponed, and I shot two seasons of Viola come il mare and Il Turco. All that preparation—horse riding, fighting—was useful for Sandokan. Filming only lasted four months: the only way was to arrive extremely prepared. It's a once-in-a-lifetime role. I hope I did a good job."

Q:Were you inspired by Kabir Bedi's Sandokan?

"We've never met. With great respect, I can say that I've read all of Salgari's novels and seen his older works, but I wanted to create an authentic character. When I act, I draw inspiration from many things, but I don't imitate anyone. My Sandokan is a bit ascetic, a bit prophet, a bit savior of a people."

Q:Do you identify with the definition of "Malaysian tiger"?

"Today, it's fashionable to say 'I feel like a lion' or to get a lion tattoo on your back, but it all seems very cliché to me: that idea of ​​strong men who want to resemble a feline. I find it banal. We can call Sandokan a 'tiger' because he's physically agile, but he has his fragilities."

Q:Do you think we've abandoned the "alpha male" model by 2025?

"I've never gotten too involved in these discussions, but I know there's also talk of the 'sigma male.' He's a man who doesn't enter into pointless competitions with others, he doesn't need to appear strong at all costs, he's rediscovered his tenderness. Sandokan, for me, is a sigma man, not an alpha one."

Q:In what sense?

"In Turkey, I started with romantic comedies. Until I was 29 or 30, I couldn't do anything else, even though I knew I could give more. It's a problem common to many American actors: Matthew McConaughey said he turned down 14 million for a rom-com just to change direction, and then Dallas Buyers Club came along. At the last Venice Film Festival, Dwayne Johnson said that for years, he was only seen through his physicality. I was reckless: I left Turkey, came to Italy looking for another career, and then Sandokan came along. Now I'm filming an action series in Spain. I dream of a James Bond-like future, but I know that if new doors open, it's because I've worked hard. Freedom comes from courage, but also from knowledge."
