🇺🇬Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja has responded to concerns raised on medical interns.
Nabbanja says the facilitation of medical interns was introduced after a directive by President Museveni to the Ministry of Health, arguing that it was an NRM Government intervention, not an Opposition initiative.
She says the number of interns has grown over time due to the increasing number of universities training health workers, and adds that the Minister of Health should present a comprehensive report to guide Parliament’s understanding of the matter.

Our salvation therefore rests squarely in the hands of Hon. Baryomunsi @CHRISBARYOMUNS1, @DrAyumeCharles.
@TheUMAofficial trusts them to do the right thing like Hon. Baryomunsi did in 1995/1996.
Over to you Honourables.

@TheUMAofficial is now confident that our redemption is near.
5. Licensure is different from studying. Trying to change this to mix the two up can NEVER justify the concept of working without pay.
6. Kindly do a bench mark of our neighboring countries.
7. We can afford to pay Medical interns, it is an investment, not an expense.
🇺🇬 “The teaching and learning of sciences, which has caused medical doctors to more than double or triple in our education institutions, is a fundamental policy issue by Government. We are talking about the positive impact of deliberately channelling resources to the human resource development of our country.”
Jessica Alupo says Government should be allowed to discuss and review the proposal on medical interns’ facilitation, following concerns raised by the Leader of the Opposition.

🇺🇬The Medical interns debate is back on the floor.
Leader of the Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi, MP for Nakawa West, has asked Government to drop the reported policy of suspending facilitation for medical interns.
He says medical interns provide critical labour after completing their training and should not be expected to serve patients without support for basic needs such as accommodation and feeding.
“How do you expect them to show up to take care of us, including us in this place?”
Why it matters: the issue touches both health worker welfare and patient care, especially in public hospitals that rely on interns as part of frontline service delivery.

Hon @JoelSsenyonyi: The question of the lack of resources for medical interns does not arise. The government recently suspended public holiday functions to save money.
We, as parliament, had already passed that entire budget so that money is available, and about UGX 24 billion is going to be saved.
Now that those functions are not going to be held, why don’t we channel that money to the medical interns?

They did not consult anyone. They dint consult deans of medical schools, for us at UMA might be small boys, but they din’t consult key stakeholders. Maybe the policy was done by AI or some few policy people. - Prof Frank Asimwe

Government is doing divide and rule. Discriminating the poor private students. What happens to me who was under private sponsorship for five years and they are done. It’s impossible to secure a sponsor to cater for your welfare - Dr_Chris_Twine
