In the 1980s, Robert Rauschenberg embarked on an extensive exploration of metal, amplifying its reflective, textural, and sculptural properties and thematic possibilities.

In sculpture, he incorporated objects made of scrap metal; while in paintings, he featured his own photographs screenprinted onto copper, stainless steel, or mirrored aluminum. He activated the compositions with acrylic paint, enamel, and tarnishes.

In "Easter Lake," part of the Galvanic Suite series (1988–91), he screenprinted images of printed fabric, chickens, and swans, among others, onto galvanized steel, which he embellished with broad brushstrokes and splashes of paint.
