A note from the author of the play, Bob Sennett:

I have always loved the ocean, and stories about the sea. Living in a landlocked country as I do, this is a new form of nostalgia.

Hart Crane made his first appearance, obliquely, in my novel ‘Vinegar Hill’ when the hero, Sully Harker, invokes him in a poetry class at Brooklyn College. For his efforts, Sully (and Hart) were called ‘queer,’ and from that point on I knew I had to do something more with this most modern of poets.

I read Paul Mariani’s biography, ‘The Broken Tower,’ and watched the short film of the same name, improbably starring James Franco. I read Crane’s letters and his poems, and I found Hugh Ryan’s ‘When Brooklyn Was Queer’ which helped me fill in the history of the borough in which I grew up and the context of the lives of the gay men and women who lived there.

‘Dear Emil’ started out as a novella, but when I saw the dramatic possibilities of a lonely poet alone in the middle of the sea with nothing but a bottle of rum, a record player, and his typewriter the arc of a play appeared to me.
