Our vision is that all Irish patients can afford and access the medicines they need to get well, stay well, and live well. We believe that through stakeholder engagement we can deliver reform that can provide great benefits to both patients and the State.

The significance of a resilient and sustainable generics, biosimilars, and value-added medicines industry cannot be understated, particularly given the mounting challenges. Alongside our members, we will strive to overcome these challenges. [3] 🧵
Our 3 key priorities are:
🔸Patent reform to enable greater market competition.
🔸Improved access to essential medicines.
🔸Enabling our industry to operate in the green, digital era.

With MFI members supplying the majority of medicine in Ireland to the HSE and patients directly, it is committed to effecting real change and reforms that guarantee patients have access to the medicines they need at affordable prices. [2] 🧵
Founded in 2016, Medicines for Ireland (MFI) is an established industry voice within the Irish healthcare system. It represents the pivotal role and interests of manufacturers and suppliers of generic, biosimilar, and value-added medicines. [1] 🧵
MFI calls on the Irish Government to introduce reforms, encouraging the HSE to get involved early in court cases to recover losses if a patent is later found invalid. In doing so, the State could save hundreds of millions of euros per year.

MFI members face mounting barriers to early market entry in Ireland. The current legal landscape in Ireland has made it increasingly difficult for our members to operate, resulting in overspending for the Irish State. 🧵 [1]
Where a preliminary injunction is granted against the launch of a generic product, the State continues to pay 100% reimbursement price. Currently, there is no basis for the HSE to recover the amount it has overpaid for a medicine if a patent is later held to be invalid. 🧵 [3]
Through improved digital and environmental practices, our member companies can continue to provide medicines to those who need it most while overcoming the industry challenges of today. 🧵 [2]
Finally, we will continue to find the balance between investments in sustainability and protecting access to affordable, essential medicines. We must ensure that any changes in environmental legislation does not lead to unintended consequences for patient access. 🧵 [4]
MFI believes in digitalising and harmonising the generic, biosimilar, and value-added medicines industry in Ireland and across the EU to streamline processes, enhance efficiency, and improve the environmental impact it creates. 🧵 [1]
