The ₦500 That Saved Me From Becoming a Thief

I was only eight years old, a curious Primary 3 pupil. Back then, my parents would give me about #10 to #20 as feeding allowance to school. Honestly, that amount could barely do anything.

Meanwhile, I had this male classmate who showed up every day with all sorts of goodies. My curious self couldn’t take it anymore. I asked him: “How are you able to buy all these things every day? Do your parents really give you that much money?”

He laughed. “Oyin, no o.”

Now I was even more curious “Then how?” I asked him.

He leaned closer and said, still laughing, “I steal from my parents.”

I was shocked!!!.

He explained how he would take extra money from his mum’s bag or his parents’ drawer and add it to his allowance. Then he said something surprising:

“You should try it too.” And guess what? I DID!!!.

That day after school, I got home and luckily, no one was around. I started what I call the “Gulder Ultimate Search for Hidden Money”.

I searched every nook and cranny of the house but I couldn’t find any money. It became really tiring at some point and I almost gave up. After searching for about an hour, I eventually saw #50. My heart leaped with so much joy.

The following day in school, I told my friend about it and joyfully bought goodies with the money as well. He hyped me and said:

“Now, we go higher, try stealing ₦500 when you get home today.”

Mission accepted… or so I thought.

That same day after school, I got home and this time, something strange and scary really happened.

As I opened the door to the house, right there on the table was ₦500. Just lying there. No stress. No searching.

It scared the bejesus out of me and in that moment, something inside me paused. I thought to myself:

“Oyindamola, yesterday, you scattered the whole house for ₦50. Today, ₦500 is right here, easy to take. But if you take this one, will you really go scot-free?”

That inner voice spoke louder than anything else. So I didn’t take it. Instead, when my mum got back home that evening, I went to her, knelt down, and confessed everything. The ₦50 I took, the temptation I faced and the choice I made. I even begged her to punish me.

But my mum…she hugged me. Oh my sweet mother, she forgave me and spoke deep words into my soul. And in that moment, I made a promise to myself “NEVER AGAIN”.

The next day, when my friend asked if I succeeded, I simply said, “NO and please, leave me the fvck alone!!!.”

Since then, stealing has never been my thing. In fact, I detest it so much. Stealing isn’t just an act, it’s a habit that, if not corrected early, can grow into something really dangerous. That’s why values, upbringing and choice matters.

You might get away with it once. Maybe even twice. But every time you choose to steal from someone, you’re shaping the kind of person you become. Because in the end, who you become is worth far more than anything you could ever steal.
