The profiling of mosques and religious staff in Kashmir is a staggering overreach that demands a serious rethink.

Security is a primary concern for everyone, no one denies that. However, even during the valley’s darkest & most volatile periods, we never saw this level of intrusion into the sacred space of the masjid. By demanding bank account details, social media handles, and phone numbers etc from mosque committees & Imams, the state is treating the heart of our community like a criminal enterprise.

In Muslims, the Molvi or Imam leading the prayer is the most respected figure in society. This level of granular surveillance, treating spiritual leaders as "Persons of Interest" is a direct blow to their dignity. When have we seen such intrusive exercises carried out against the institutions of any other religion? For the alleged mistakes of a few, an entire faith & its practitioners cannot be subjected to collective punishment and systemic suspicion. The practical fallout will be devastating. We have many pious government employees & professionals who lead Salah in their local mosques out of pure devotion. Faced with this level of harassment & data-mining, many will simply refuse to lead prayers to protect their privacy & livelihoods.

Whether it is the Sunni congregations or the Shia mourners, the message being sent is one of distrust. When you make people afraid to even participate in their religious duties, you aren't building "security" you are breaking the social fabric. This isn't just about data, it’s about the fundamental right to practice one's faith without being looked at through the lens of a dossier.
