Electricity Safety Managers Review Performance, Intensify Efforts to Reduce Accident Rates

Health, safety and accident prevention took centre stage on Monday, 29 June 2026, as the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) convened the first biannual Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) meeting for the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) in Abuja.

The three-day meeting brought together HSE and Performance Managers from Generation Companies (GenCos), the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), and Distribution Companies (DisCos) to review industry safety performance and develop strategies for reducing accidents across the electricity value chain.

Speaking at the opening session, the Head of Technical Regulation Division at NERC, Engr. (Dr.) Abu Kadiri, announced the release of the new Health and Safety Code and urged participants to ensure its effective implementation by sensitising staff within their respective organisations. He also highlighted the Commission's ongoing accident reduction initiatives aimed at improving safety performance across the industry.

Also speaking, the Head of Health, Safety and Environment at NERC, Dr. Jonathan Okoronkwo, identified stakeholder sensitisation against the vandalism of critical power infrastructure as one of the Commission's key safety initiatives, noting that protecting electricity assets is essential to safeguarding lives and ensuring reliable power supply.

The meeting featured presentations and discussions on: Review of significant incidents and safety compliance across the industry; Assessment of HSE budget implementation; Strategies for accident prevention and reduction; and Legal considerations in accident investigation and regulatory compliance.

Held twice annually, the HSE meeting provides a platform for stakeholders to review safety performance, share best practices, and reinforce a strong safety culture across the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry.

DECLARATION OF FORCE MAJEURE ON OWORONSHOKI 132/33kV AND LEKKI 330/132kV TRANSMISSION SUBSTATIONS

The Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN hereby declares force majeure on Oworoshoki 132/33kV and Lekki 330/132kV Transmission Substations as a result of flooding caused by continuous rainfall in Lagos.

Although Lekki 132kV Transmission Substation is still in service as water is continuously being pumped out of the station, Oworonshoki Transmission Substation on the other hand is presently not in service as the level of water has affected two power transformers, TR1- 60MVA and TR3- 30MVA that tripped on no load even after attempted restoration.

Presently, all power protection and control cables of the two power transformers are submerged inside water, and efforts to evacuate the water have proved ineffective as the rain continues to fall.

Our engineers are working doing everything possible to evacuate the flood to enable them test the transformers for restoration.

TCN regrets any inconvenience this might cause Eko DisCo's customers taking supply from the substation.

AfDB Delegation Visits NERC, Provides Updates on Desert to Power Initiative

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) received a delegation from the African Development Bank (AfDB) on a working visit aimed at providing updates on key electrification initiatives and exploring opportunities for deeper collaboration in advancing Nigeria’s energy access objectives.

The AfDB delegation was led by Mr. Chigoziri Egeruoh, who briefed the Commission on the progress of the Nigeria Electrification Project (NEP). He highlighted key achievements recorded under the project and ongoing efforts to improve electricity access for underserved and unserved communities across the country.

The delegation also introduced the Commission to AfDB’s Desert to Power initiative, a transformative renewable energy programme designed to accelerate the deployment of clean energy solutions across Africa.
In turn, the Commission reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with development partners to support sustainable electricity access, improve service delivery, and advance Nigeria’s energy transition agenda.
Key highlights included:

- Update on the progress and achievements of the Nigeria Electrification Project (NEP)
- Continued efforts to expand electricity access to underserved and unserved communities- Introduction of AfDB’s Desert to Power renewable energy programme
- Focus on Mini Grids, Energizing Health, and Energizing Education as key intervention areas
- Exploration of collaborative opportunities to support Nigeria’s electrification and energy transition goals

The visit reaffirmed the commitment of both institutions to strengthening cooperation, promoting sustainable energy solutions, and advancing universal access to reliable electricity in Nigeria.

Brentale Schools Students Embark on Educational Visit to TCN Benin Sub-Region

Students from Brentale Schools, Benin City, Edo State, were hosted by The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) Benin Sub-Region on an educational excursion on March 13, 2026.

During the visit, TCN engineers, led by the Principal Manager, Transmission, Engr. Mathew Ealefoh, took the students on a tour of the substation, explaining the pivotal role of various stakeholders in Nigeria's electricity value chain, with particular focus on TCN's role in the sector.

The students observed the practical day to day activities in the transmission substation, and were taught bulk power evacuation process from generation companies to distribution companies, and were also shown key components such as transformers, switchgears, transmission towers, and personal protective equipment (PPE) among others.

Earlier, when the students arrived at the transmission subregion, The Assistant Manager, HSE, Mr Victor Osarenren, briefed them on health and safety protocols, emphasizing the importance of compliance and the dangers of non-observance.

The school management led by Mr. Eric Owviemedaye appreciated TCN for the practical exposure and valuable knowledge shared, and expressed the hope that it inspires the students to pursue careers in science, engineering and energy-related fields.

NOTICE OF ONGOING MAINTENANCE ON YOLA–MAYO BELWA–JALINGO 330kV TRANSMISSION LINE

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) hereby informs the public that its maintenance crew is currently carrying out a maintenance exercise on the Yola–Mayo Belwa–Jalingo 330kV transmission line today, Thursday, March 5, 2026, from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm.

The maintenance exercise is to enable TCN contractor correct line sag along the Yola–Mayo Belwa–Jalingo 330kV transmission line.

As a result, the Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC) will be unable to off-take electricity for supply to customers in Yola, Mayo Belwa, Jalingo, and environs for nine hours.

TCN apologises for the inconvenience this may cause electricity consumers in the affected areas.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) observed a demolition exercise conducted by the Bauchi State Infrastructure Development and Maintenance Agency (BASIDMA) on February 11, 2026, at the high-tension corridor along Zango and Yelwa Community in Bauchi.

The operation targeted residential and commercial structure erected within the statutory Right of Way (RoW) of TCN transmission lines. This action follows sustained community sensitization and stakeholder engagement, initiated by TCN in 2025 ensuring grid stability and public safety.

BASIDMA, responsible for regulating land use, controlling development, and managing infrastructure in Bauchi State, took the decision to demolish the structures following these engagements. The agency's action demonstrates its commitment to enforcing regulations and ensuring public safety.
