Eleven years ago today, #CitizensUnited opened the floodgates for unlimited dark money in our politics. Since then, corporations have doubled down on trying to drown out the voices of everyday people. To put families first, we need campaign finance reform.
As you watch MAGA protestors storm the capitol largely unimpeded, recall that BLM protestors were peacefully outside the White House and Trump had them dispersed with, what turned out to be, tear gas.
“Defund the police” freaks people out because it actually addresses structural racism in a concrete way. Anything that addresses systemic racism or economic inequality beyond shallow symbolism & gestures will be met with resistance. No different from the fight to end segregation.
We won’t know the results of the election tonight, but we do know one thing:
We hoped for a complete and overwhelming repudiation of this monster and everything he stands for—and that does not appear to be happening.
And it’s fucking heartbreaking.
Just so we’re clear, there is no way to have an honest conversation about immigration from Central America without talking both about the impact of climate change and about a history of US intervention that politically and economically destabilized many of these countries.
Our Constitution is a living document because it requires real people to interpret laws written in a living language.
If it were self-evident, judges would be unnecessary.
Interpretation matters.
