The wood is riddled with borings from beetles, probably the same group (cerambycid or 'longhorn' beetles) that cause massive damage + cost ($billions) to wood plantations today... they're pretty cute🪲, but their hungry, wood-munching larvae are not!🪱
Here's a thing: We used X-rays to blast some fossilized wood to see what was inside🌲The results? It was BORING(S)... and very exciting!🐞 Huge thanks to @MeganPalaeo, @Dancingfossils, @Joseph_Bevitt, and the good folks @ausynchrotron#Xray#Paleobotany https://t.co/NJA1jKEj58
This beetle is Chalcolampra pustulata, a member of the Leaf Beetles Family Chrysomelidae. Observed by #EntSocVic member @MartinLagerwey near Waburton, VIC, Australia, this genus was first described by French zoologist and entomologist Émile Blanchard back in 1853. #beetles

In a fascinating video for @Aus_ScienceWeek, PhD candidate at @UniofAdelaide, @MeganPalaeo explores what the damage on fossilised leaves can tell us, in a story about the ancient hungry, hungry caterpillar!

📣📣📣 We are very excited to finally launch our #PDU3 conference logo! Congratulations again to UQ honours student and illustrator Nellie Pease for her winning entry!
We hope to see you at PDU3 in Perth, July next year.
National #ScienceWeek is just around the corner but you can start celebrating with #SCINEMA which is now live!
There's over 60 science films available this year to watch until 31 August. And it's all FREE!
Registration takes just a few minutes: https://t.co/Ly7osGx70a
A video of mine where I get to talk about herbivory of ancient bugs is being presented as a part of this event! Amazing that it's all booked out within 24 hours, but if you'd like to join the waitlist, you might be able to snag a spot to take the family!
"Dinner with the Dinosaurs"
Aug 29th for @Aus_ScienceWeek at the @BotGardensSA, featuring @DinosDownUnder and a collection of fabulous friends!
Picnic with the palaeos, then sing and dance in a grand, prehistoric adventure!

What did dinosaurs eat for dinner?
In a world without grass, what was there for the herbivores to browse on? Ferns, ferns, and more ferns, amongst other things, it turns out. We'll have lots more to say about dino-dining as we head into @Aus_ScienceWeek

It was fun editing these gorgeous ~40 million year old NSW leaves for a (now postponed) poster presentation. Some great examples of hole feeding on the left leaf and a wonderful mine on the right!
Finished my first illustration in Adobe Photoshop! This one took a while! It's of Curculio occidentis, the filbert weevil, a native insect species to the US that feeds on acorns and is considered a pest of hazelnuts.
Even the insect world loves Fridays! @plantandfood@Bugologists nymphs from our tomato potato psyllid (Bactericera cockerelli) colony giving us a little Friday happy dance 💃 #HappyFriday#nerds
I've started a little project - a minifig scale model of ANSTO's OPAL research reactor, and my lab, the Australian Centre for Neutron Scattering.
Contributions welcome!
It's Lego, so please forgive the few gags and clichés that will be thrown in.
