Dropping Parandur is not Change. It's an irreversible setback for Tamil Nadu's growth

The announcement made today by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu to drop the Parandur International Airport project will set the State’s development back by several years. Tamil Nadu’s interests cannot be mortgaged for petty political considerations.

An announcement of such far-reaching importance being made under Rule No. 110, shutting out any opportunity for debate or even for members to voice their views, is deeply troubling.

Tamil Nadu leads the country across sectors, from electronics exports to automobiles. A world-class airport in its capital is not merely desirable, but absolutely essential. Rejecting such a vital project is not change. It is a massive disappointment.

The site was carefully selected after evaluating all available alternatives, and the land acquisition process has been almost completed. With several stages of preparatory work and approvals already completed, we had drawn up plans to ensure that construction could begin at a rapid pace once we returned to office. If the new government now starts all over again, identifies another location and goes through the entire process before work can even begin, Tamil Nadu’s growth trajectory itself will DROP.

Under the #DravidianModel government, Tamil Nadu became the first port of call for investors. This decision threatens to push the State to the bottom of the table. The Chief Minister’s announcement is nothing short of a jackpot for competing States!

Without industrial growth, economic targets of one trillion USD or 1.5 trillion USD are simply impossible to achieve. Taken without foresight, planning or consultation, this decision by the TVK government is a devastating blow to the employment dreams of Tamil Nadu’s youth.

பரந்தூர் பன்னாட்டு விமான நிலையத் திட்டத்தைக் கைவிடுவதாக மாண்புமிகு தமிழ்நாடு முதலமைச்சர் இன்று வெளியிட்டுள்ள அறிவிப்பு மாநில வளர்ச்சியைப் பல ஆண்டுகள் பின்னுக்குத் தள்ளிவிடும். அற்ப அரசியல் காரணங்களுக்காகத் தமிழ்நாட்டின் நலனை அடகு வைக்கக் கூடாது.

மிகுந்த முக்கியத்துவம் வாய்ந்த அறிவிப்பை விதி எண்.110-இன்கீழ் அறிவித்துவிட்டு விவாதத்துக்கோ கருத்து தெரிவிக்கவோ கூட இடமில்லாமல் செய்திருப்பது சரியல்ல.

மின்னணுப் பொருட்கள் ஏற்றுமதி, ஆட்டோமொபைல் என சகல துறைகளிலும் முதலிடம் வகிக்கும் தமிழ்நாட்டின் தலைநகரில் உலகத் தரத்திலான ஒரு விமான நிலையம் அமைவது மிக மிக அவசியமானது. அதை வேண்டாம் என மறுத்திருப்பது மாற்றமல்ல; பெருத்த ஏமாற்றம்!

சாத்தியமுள்ள அனைத்து மாற்று இடங்களையும் கவனமாகப் பரிசீலித்த பின்புதான் பரந்தூர் தேர்ந்தெடுக்கப்பட்டது. நிலம் கையகப்படுத்தலும் நிறைவடையும் தறுவாயில் உள்ளது. பலகட்டப் பணிகள், ஒப்புதல்கள் நிறைவடைந்த நிலையில் ஆட்சிக்கு வந்ததும் கட்டுமானம் விரைந்து தொடங்கப்பட பல திட்டங்களை நாங்கள் வைத்திருந்தோம். தற்போது அமைந்துள்ள புதிய அரசு மீண்டும் வேறு இடத்தைத் தேர்வு செய்து பணிகள் தொடங்குமுன், தமிழ்நாட்டின் வளர்ச்சியே மொத்தமாக DROP ஆகிவிடும்.

முதலீட்டாளர்களின் முதல் முகவரியாக #DravidianModel ஆட்சியில் இருந்த தமிழ்நாடு கடைசி இடத்துக்குத் தள்ளப்படும். முதலமைச்சரின் அறிவிப்பு நம் போட்டி மாநிலங்களுக்கு அடித்த ஜாக்பாட்!

தொழில் வளர்ச்சி இல்லாமல் ஒரு ட்ரில்லியன் டாலர், ஒன்றரை டரில்லியன் டாலர் என்ற பொருளாதார வளர்ச்சி இலக்குகள் சாத்தியமே இல்லை. எந்த யோசனையும் ஆலோசனைகளும் இல்லாமல் த.வெ.க. அரசு எடுத்திருக்கும் இந்த முடிவு தமிழ்நாட்டு இளைஞர்களின் வேலைவாய்ப்புக் கனவுகளைத் தகர்க்கும் பேரிடி!

There was a time when Chennai was the indisputable gateway to South India. If you were flying in from overseas or another corner of the country, you landed at Meenambakkam. From there, you caught a train or drove out to Bangalore or Hyderabad. That was a time.

Then modern aviation infrastructure changed the landscape in Karnataka, Telangana, and Andhra. While Bengaluru and Hyderabad built world-class, seamless transit behemoths, Chennai’s airport expansion got bogged down in endless delays, broken glass panels, and bureaucratic paralysis.

Fast forward to 2026: Chennai isn't just losing its hub status; it risks getting outpaced by tier-2 or tier-3 cities across neighboring states that are hungry for growth, connectivity, and modern infrastructure.

If you thought a new political face meant fresh momentum, reality is hitting hard: running a State's economic engine takes actual execution, not fan-club politics and whistle-blowing rallies.

Enjoy sucking your thumbs while the flight schedules, investments and jobs move elsewhere. Good luck, Gen Z, Gen Beta, and Gen Alpha. You won’t realize the weight of this devastating collapse now, but you sure will in a few years.

Today, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Thiru @TVKVijayHQ announced in the assembly that the TN Government has decided to cancel the Parandur Airport Project. TN CM mentioned that certain sites are under consideration, but it would have been helpful if he had also proposed a new site for the second airport near Chennai, as the delay in identifying its location has set the state's development back by at least 10 years.

This announcement of the cancellation of the new airport project carries an opportunity cost that the State Government needs to consider carefully. Even if the TN Government chooses to move forward with a second airport instead of Parandur through an administrative decision soon, finding a site, taking approval from the Central Government and statutory bodies, issuing tenders, acquiring land, and securing licenses could take at least ten years before the airport becomes operational. Meanwhile, other States would be advancing, leaving us behind.

We should first accept that the current airport in Chennai is insufficient even by today's standards. Chennai’s airport spans a 1300-acre land parcel; Hyderabad's airport spans approximately 5,500 acres; Bengaluru's spans 4000 acres; Navi Mumbai's is built on 2866 acres; and Delhi airport spans 5100 acres. With such a small space, the current airport in Chennai should ideally offer a better customer experience, but taking local transport from the arrivals area is a nightmare today.

Chennai was once the gateway of South India. Today, Chennai airport ranks 5th in total passenger-handling capacity, with a capacity of 30 million passengers per year. Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad are above Chennai on this table. The present Chennai airport is not classified as a Code F airport due to inadequate taxiways and aerobridges, which make landing large aircraft such as the A380 unsuitable at Chennai. In the South, the Bengaluru and Hyderabad airports can handle large aircraft.

Considering the above, I request the TN Govt to accelerate the process of identifying a suitable location for the 2nd airport in Chennai at the earliest, as delays in site identification could push us well beyond 10 years. Parties may come and go. Governments will change. But 20 years later, when the people of Tamil Nadu look back, they should not feel suffocated by a sick building that we would still call an airport, because the administrators of the day lacked the ability to forecast.

Also, in March this year, news reports stated that the TN Govt had acquired 1,700 acres for the Parandur airport project, out of the 5,746 acres needed. What does the State govt now intend to do with this acquired land?

Since agriculture is the backbone of the state, I don't expect Tamil Nadu to have expressways under the TVK Government. Building expressways, bullet trains, etc., requires more agricultural land.

Why not reduce existing roads and allocate that land for agriculture?

Chennai is already badly lagging Bengaluru & Hyderabad. We should have been in the final stages of a 2nd airport by now—not restarting the process.

Parandur wasn’t just an idea: site selection, technical studies, clearances, DPR, land acquisition, compensation & even acquisition of 1,700+ acres of total 3000 acres required from Private owners had already happened.

Yet, like the earlier Sriperumbudur airport proposal and Chennai–Salem Expressway, Parandur now is becoming another lost opportunity.
Ultimately, Tamil Nadu loses—and so do our youngsters. Thousands of educated Chennai youth already move to Bengaluru & Hyderabad for better-paying opportunities.

“We’ll find another site” doesn’t solve the problem. Starting site selection, studies, clearances and land acquisition all over again means years lost.

Even in the best case, a completely new airport could take close to a decade to see its first flight. Imagine where Bengaluru, Hyderabad and other cities will be by 2036.

Chennai voted overwhelmingly for TVK. The city deserved to be rewarded with growth and opportunity—not punished by another decade of delay.
The saddest part? Some hero-worshipping youngsters will be are celebrating this, without realising they may be celebrating a decision that hurts their own careers and future.

People keep asking me why I keep supporting DMK, today many would ve got the answer.

DMK is the only party which showed commitment to builf 2nd for Chennai, and they focused on infrastructure and economic growth of the state.
Apart from Dmk, EPS showed such a commitment.

Request @Udhaystalin to approach court against this decision and fight for Parandur Airport.
