Here's how Vijay's TVK campaign weaponized computational propaganda, AI holograms, and 85,000 fan clubs to shatter Tamil Nadu's 60-year political duopoly.

FIRST: What actually happened
On May 4, 2026, actor-turned-politician Vijay's two-year-old party — Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) — won 108 of 234 seats in the Tamil Nadu assembly election. No roadshows. No primetime TV saturation. No decades of party machinery.
Instead: reels, fan edits, whistle memes, AI portraits, and a hologram that went viral before the rally it appeared at even ended.
The trade press called it "the algorithm election." That's catchy. It's also imprecise — and the imprecision matters if you're trying to understand what actually happened and what it means for democracy everywhere.
Let me be exact.

THE THREE-LAYER ARCHITECTURE
TVK's campaign ran on three distinct layers, and conflating them is the first analytical mistake most coverage makes.

Layer 1 — Organic fan infrastructure (pre-political, pre-digital)
Vijay has had organised fan clubs since 2009. By the time TVK was founded in February 2024, there were approximately 85,000 fan clubs across Tamil Nadu, operating under the umbrella of "Vijay Makkal Iyakkam." These are real people. Real WhatsApp groups. Real local coordinators who know their neighbourhoods.
This is not computational propaganda. This is a pre-digital, MGR-lineage Tamil cinema fan-club structure that predates social media by decades. What the 2026 campaign did was retrofit it with contemporary digital tooling — turning a film fandom infrastructure into a political distribution network almost overnight.
That's the novel finding. Not that TVK invented new techniques. It didn't. But that a pre-existing affective infrastructure can be re-weaponised with computational layers far faster than political scientists have assumed.

Layer 2 — Generative media and algorithmic exploitation
This is where things get genuinely new.
AI-generated images and short videos of Vijay circulated extensively on Instagram, X, and within WhatsApp networks. Much of this content was indistinguishable from human-produced fan tributes — and was redistributed without provenance markers.
A hologram of Vijay was projected at a campaign event in Kumbakonam. The hologram itself wasn't the story. The clips of the hologram, remixed and recirculated across Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts, were the story. The hologram became the meme-object. The meme circulated the hologram.
The campaign also exploited a scarcity strategy that runs counter to every traditional political playbook: Vijay rarely appeared on television or gave extended media interviews during the campaign cycle. That scarcity made every speech fragment, every clipped moment, algorithmically precious. Short-form platforms reward high engagement per unit of content. TVK engineered exactly those conditions.

Layer 3 — Documented inauthentic behaviour
On 4 March 2026, supporters of TVK were reported to have created fake social media accounts impersonating media outlets and fictitious news organisations, allegedly disseminating defamatory content about journalists.

This — and only this — meets the strict Oxford Internet Institute definition of computational propaganda: coordinated inauthentic behaviour with deceptive intent.

The actors are described as "supporters," not party operatives. That's the standard plausible-deniability architecture you see across every documented case — BJP IT cell, Duterte's campaign, Trump's troll networks. The party maintains formal distance from the most exposed activity while informal networks carry it out. Whether that distance is genuine or performative is the central evidentiary question. It is not yet resolved for TVK.
THE STRUCTURAL SHIFT SYNTHETIC MEDIA REPRESENTS.

தேர்தல் முடிவுகள் அறிவிக்கப்பட்ட பின்பு, நடக்கும் நிகழ்வுகளை நீங்கள் பார்க்கிறீர்கள். எந்தக் கட்சிக்கும் ஆட்சி அமைக்கும் பெரும்பான்மை கிடைக்காத வகையில் சட்டமன்றத் தேர்தல் முடிவுகள் அமைந்திருந்தன. ஆட்சி அமைக்கும் அளவுக்குப் பெரும்பான்மை இடங்களைத் திராவிட முன்னேற்றக் கழகத்தின் தலைமையிலான மதச்சார்பற்ற முற்போக்குக் கூட்டணி பெறவில்லை என்றாலும், குறிப்பிடத்தக்க வாக்குகளை நாம் பெற்றுள்ளோம்.
நான் ஏற்கனவே பத்திரிகைகளுக்கு அளித்த பேட்டியில், புதிய ஆட்சி அமைவதற்கு இடையூறாக இருக்க மாட்டோம் என்றும், ஆக்கபூர்வமான எதிர்க்கட்சியாக தி.மு.க. செயல்படும் என்றும் சொல்லியிருந்தேன்.

அதன்பின், என் தலைமையில் நடந்த சட்டமன்ற உறுப்பினர்கள் கூட்டத்தில், முடிவெடுக்கும் பொறுப்பை எனக்குக் கொடுத்தார்கள். அந்தக் கூட்டத்தில், “கட்சியின் நலனை மனதில் வைத்து, தலைமைக் கழக நிர்வாகிகளுடன் கலந்து பேசி முடிவெடுப்பேன்” எனத் தெரிவித்தேன்.

ஆட்சி அமைக்கும் பெரும்பான்மை யாருக்கும் கிடைக்காத நிலையில், மாற்று யோசனைகளைப் பலரும் சொன்னார்கள். என்னைப் பொறுத்தவரை, தோழமைக் கட்சிகள் எந்த முடிவை எடுத்தாலும் அவர்களின் முடிவை மதித்து ஒருங்கிணைந்து செயல்பட்டு, நிலையான ஆட்சி அமைய வேண்டும்; இன்னொரு தேர்தலுக்கு வழிவகுத்துவிடக் கூடாது என்பதே எனது எண்ணமாக இருந்தது.
எங்களது கூட்டணியைச் சார்ந்த தோழர்கள், “இன்றைய நெருக்கடியான சிக்கலைத் தவிர்க்க, நாங்கள் தமிழக வெற்றிக் கழகத்திற்கு ஆட்சி அமைக்க ஆதரவு தெரிவித்தாலும், கொள்கை அடிப்படையில் தி.மு.க. தலைமையிலான மதச்சார்பற்ற முற்போக்குக் கூட்டணியில் தொடர்கிறோம்” என்று அறிவித்திருப்பதை நான் வரவேற்கிறேன்.

கூட்டணியின் சார்பில் போட்டியிட்டு வெற்றிபெற்ற காங்கிரஸ் எம்.எல்.ஏ.க்கள் நன்றி தெரிவிக்க அண்ணா அறிவாலயம் வரவில்லை. ஒரே நாளில் தி.மு.க.வுடனான உறவை முறித்துக்கொண்டு காங்கிரஸ் கட்சி சென்றது. அதேசமயம் தமிழ்நாட்டின் உரிமைகளுக்காகவும் மக்கள் நலனுக்காகவும் தொடர்ந்து தி.மு.க.வுடன் கைகோத்துப் போராடுவோம் என்று கம்யூனிஸ்ட் தலைவர்கள் தோழர் சண்முகம், தோழர் வீரபாண்டியன், விடுதலைச் சிறுத்தைகள் கட்சித் தலைவர் திருமாவளவன் அவர்களும் அறிவித்துத் தோழமை உணர்வை வெளிப்படுத்தியுள்ளது, கொள்கையில் வலுவாக உள்ள திராவிட முன்னேற்றக் கழகத்தின் மீது அவர்கள் கொண்டுள்ள நம்பிக்கையைக் காட்டுகிறது.

இந்நேரத்தில் மிக முக்கியமான சோதனைக் காலத்தில் உறுதியுடன் உடன் நின்ற தோழமை இயக்கத் தலைவர்கள் பேராசிரியர் அய்யா காதர் மொகிதீன், அண்ணன் வைகோ, சகோதரி பிரேமலதா விஜயகாந்த், பேராசிரியர் ஜவாஹிருல்லா, சகோதரர்கள் ஈஸ்வரன், தமிமுன் அன்சாரி உள்ளிட்ட அனைவருக்கும் என் நெஞ்சார்ந்த நன்றியைத் தெரிவித்துக்கொள்கிறேன். அவர்களின் உறுதிக்கு எத்தகைய நன்றியும் பாராட்டும் பொருந்தும்.

கடந்த ஐந்தாண்டு காலத்தில் தமிழ்நாட்டை அனைத்துத் துறைகளிலும் வளர்த்தெடுத்து, தமிழ்நாட்டை வளப்படுத்தியிருக்கிறோம். ஏராளமான திட்டங்களின் மூலமாக ஒவ்வொரு தனிமனிதரும் நன்மை அடைய வழிவகை செய்துள்ளோம்.
தொலைநோக்குச் சிந்தனையும், வளமான திட்டமிடலும் கொண்ட அந்தத் திட்டங்களை அமைய இருக்கும் புதிய அரசு தொடர வேண்டும் என்பதே எனது தனிப்பட்ட விருப்பமாகும்.

மகளிர், இளைஞர்கள், மாணவர்கள், குழந்தைகள், விளிம்புநிலை மக்கள், அரசு ஊழியர்கள் ஆகியோரை உள்ளடக்கிய அனைத்துத் திட்டங்களையும் தொடர்ந்து செயல்படுத்தினால் மக்களுக்கு நன்மைகள் தொடரும்; மாநிலமும் வளரும். இதனைக் கவனத்தில் கொண்டு புதிய அரசு செயல்பட வேண்டும் என்று கேட்டுக்கொள்கிறேன்.

அமைய இருக்கும் புதிய அரசுக்கு மீண்டும் எனது நல்வாழ்த்துகளைத் தெரிவித்துக்கொள்கிறேன்.

வாக்களித்தவர்களுக்கு மட்டுமல்ல, வாக்களிக்க மறந்தவர்களுக்கும் சேர்த்தே ஆட்சி நடத்தினேன்.

அனைத்து மக்களுக்கும் உண்மையாக இருந்தேன். நான் எனது மனச்சாட்சிப்படியே செயல்பட்டேன்.

நான் எனது சக்தியை மீறி உழைத்தேன். என்னைப் போன்றே களத்தில் உழைத்த என் உயிரோடு கலந்திருக்கும் தலைவர் கலைஞரின் அன்பு உடன்பிறப்புகள் அனைவருக்கும் எனது நெஞ்சார்ந்த நன்றி!

எங்களோடு தோளோடு தோள் நின்ற தோழமை இயக்கத் தலைவர்கள், நிர்வாகிகள், தொண்டர்கள்
