It was a great pleasure to welcome friends & colleagues from EU Member States and institutions to the #Mission of Albania to the EU in Brussels to celebrate, in keeping with a well-established tradition, a key milestone in Albania’s European journey: the successful outcome of the 8th #Intergovernmental Conference and the positive assessment reflected in the Interim Benchmark Assessment Report, #IBAR.

This achievement is the result of years of sustained effort, political commitment, and far-reaching reforms, often challenging, yet essential, undertaken with determination by the Albanian #Government & institutions. It reaffirms a fundamental principle of the enlargement process: progress is, and must remain, merit-based.

We were particularly pleased to celebrate with the Commissioner for Enlargement, our @MartaKosEU. Her engagement and unwavering commitment as well as that of her team, in Brussels and in Albania, to a credible enlargement process have been instrumental in maintaining momentum and strengthening confidence in the transformative power of the #European project.

We are fully aware that the positive IBAR outcome is both an encouragement and a responsibility. It recognizes how far #Albania has come, while setting the stage for the work that lies ahead. One thing is certain: Albania remains fully committed to advancing reforms, moving steadily toward the closure of negotiating chapters, and fulfilling the aspirations of generations of Albanians who see their future firmly anchored in the #EuropeanUnion.

Today's gathering was therefore not only a celebration of an important achievement, but also an opportunity to express our gratitude to all those who have accompanied and supported Albania along this path: the European Commission and other EU institutions, to all Member States for their understanding, support and encouragement, and all our friends who continue to believe in Albania and in the European future of the #WesternBalkans.

A great start to the day at @AlbanianDiplo together with the Secretary General of the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, hosting a group of students from #LeidenUniversity during their visit to Albania.

It was a pleasure to exchange views with such an engaged and thoughtful group of students on the major challenges facing Europe and the world today. I was particularly encouraged by their interest in Albania’s path toward EU membership and the insightful questions they raised throughout our discussion.

Encounters like these reaffirm the importance of dialogue between institutions and the next generation. Despite the complexities of the times we live in, young people continue to inspire optimism through their curiosity, critical thinking, and commitment to shaping a more resilient and prosperous future.

📍Belgium -- Pleased to engage in a substantive discussion on “EU Enlargement: An Albanian View” at the Egmont – Royal Institute for International Relations. 🇦🇱🇧🇪

Together with a distinguished group of experts, diplomats, policymakers, and think tank representatives, we exchanged views on EU enlargement as a geopolitical imperative and a strategic investment in #Europe’s future.

The discussion highlighted a growing recognition that the future of the #WesternBalkans is inseparable from the future of Europe itself. A stable, secure, democratic, and fully integrated Western Balkans is essential to Europe’s ability to remain geopolitically credible, strategically relevant, and resilient in an increasingly complex international environment.

In #Albania’s case, the EU accession process has proven to be the most powerful catalyst for transformation, driving institutional modernization, strengthening the rule of law, consolidating democratic governance, improving public administration, and advancing economic development. It has also reinforced Albania’s full alignment with the values, policies, and strategic objectives that define the European project.

I emphasized the importance of preserving a credible, predictable, and #merit-based enlargement process, one that rewards genuine reform efforts and delivers tangible progress for both candidate countries and the European Union.

Such exchanges are invaluable for fostering strategic dialogue, strengthening mutual understanding, and building the broad political and intellectual consensus needed to advance a stronger, more united, and more secure Europe. They are equally important in sustaining an open and informed conversation about the common future, helping to communicate the strategic value of enlargement and European integration both in the candidate countries and the Member States.

We also exchanged views on the pace and timelines of the #enlargement process, reaffirming the importance of maintaining the current momentum and to advance decisively toward our strategic objective of completing negotiations within this decade. This is not only a national priority, but also the fulfillment of the European aspiration that generations of Albanians have carried and worked for over many years.

We agreed that enlargement remains one of the European Union’s most successful strategic policies, capable of driving transformation, stability, and prosperity.

We also exchanged views on the current dynamics in the #WesternBalkans, underlining the importance of preserving regional stability, strengthening good-neighbourly relations, and advancing the European integration of the entire region. Wall of #Enlargement — Change is coming. 🇦🇱🇪🇺

👉 On 14 October 2024, everything for Albania was red. Not a single chapter had been opened.

👉 Eleven months later, on 17 November 2025, everything turned yellow. All 33 chapters were opened.

👉 Following the 8th Intergovernmental Conference on the #IBAR held yesterday, the biggest test so far in our accelerated accession process, the colours are beginning to change once again. They will soon start turning green, the final stage, before ultimately turning "blue" by 2030.

We know this well: Albania’s path to EU membership is only credible when it is earned, merit-based, grounded in real transformation, and driven by a truly European mindset. That is exactly what we are doing.

What once seemed distant, inaccessible, or even impossible to many is now becoming reality: step by step, reform by reform, commitment by commitment, every single day, together with our partners.

Thank you to everyone in Team Europe Albania;

Thank you to Commissioner @MartaKosEU and to our colleagues in the European Commission for their remarkable dedication;

📍Bruxelles - Très heureux d’avoir rencontré aujourd’hui le Ministre français des Affaires européennes, @benjaminhaddad, avec lequel nous avons eu un échange approfondi, en particuler sur le processus d’élargissement de l’Union européenne, la situation dans les Balkans occidentaux ainsi que l’importance de la coopération régionale.

La dynamique des relations entre l’Albanie 🇦🇱 et la France 🇫🇷 n’a jamais été aussi riche, solide et prometteuse. J’ai exprimé ma profonde reconnaissance pour la position claire et constante de la #France en faveur d’une #Europe élargie, plus unie, plus forte et toujours solidaire, capable d’affronter et de répondre aux défis d’un monde de plus en plus turbulent.

J’ai également tenu à saluer l’engagement personnel du Ministre dans l’accompagnement du parcours européen de l’Albanie, notamment lors des étapes décisives de notre processus d’adhésion à l’Union européenne.

Au-delà du dialogue politique renforcé, notre partenariat bilatéral se traduit par des projets concrets et tangibles au bénéfice de nos citoyens. Albania strongly condemns yet another brutal and indiscriminate large-scale ballistic missile and drone #attack launched last night by Russia against civilian targets in Ukraine, in total disregard for human life and basic human decency.

This time, the residential complex where the #Ambassador of Albania to #Ukraine resides was struck, putting his life at serious risk. This is unacceptable!

Targeting or endangering civilian areas and #diplomatic personnel represents a grave escalation and another stark reminder of the human cost of Russia’s continued aggression.

This war of choice has lasted for far too long. For more than four years since its illegal full-scale invasion, Russia has relentlessly targeted energy infrastructure, schools, hospitals, and homes across Ukraine. Yet it has failed to break the #courage, determination, resilience, and strength of the Ukrainian people.

Russia is not winning; it is only killing, destroying, and inflicting widespread devastation and suffering.

We reiterate our call on #Russia to immediately cease these attacks, put an end to the war against Ukraine, fully abide by international law, and return to negotiations.

#Albania will continue to stand firmly with #Ukraine and reiterates its unwavering support for Ukraine’s #sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity. Those responsible for these attacks must be held accountable.

Very pleased to join the #GLOBSEC Forum in a panel discussion on #enlargement and current trends. 🇦🇱🇪🇺

The EU #accession process remains our top national priority. It lies at the heart of our development drive, has continuously guided our reforms, strengthened our institutions, and helped transform Albania into a functioning democracy grounded in the rule of law.

We have come a long way and we know what it takes to earn EU membership. For us, EU accession is a #two-way process.

The opening of all 33 negotiation chapters in record time reflects two sides of the same coin: on one hand, our unwavering determination to deliver reforms faithfully and consistently in a merit-based process; on the other, the clarity of vision and political commitment of EU institutions and Member States. This shared effort is what makes the process and its progress tangible, credible, and real.

Our #ambition and focus are clear: to continue and consolidate an irreversible reform path, moving closer to our objective every day. In this regard, the upcoming eighth Intergovernmental Conference (IGC8) with #Albania on the Interim Benchmark Assessment Report (IBAR), scheduled for 26 May 2026, will mark another key milestone in the EU accession process. It will confirm the fulfilment of the interim benchmarks by Albania and to set closing benchmarks for Cluster 1 'The Fundamentals'

EU #enlargement has always been an investment in Europe’s security and resilience. Today, this has become an imperative. That is why we support and embrace gradual integration, the “access before accession” approach, where, as we move closer to EU membership by 2030, citizens and businesses can already feel the tangible benefits of integration along the way.

A reliable and committed partner, fully aligned with the EU Common Foreign and Security Policy, standing firmly with Ukraine, and contributing actively within NATO, #Albania will continue to play a responsible and constructive role in strengthening collective security, stability, and resilience, in the #WesternBalkans region and beyond.

Today at the @NATO Informal Meeting of Foreign Ministers in #Helsingborg, I reaffirmed Albania's unwavering commitment to NATO values, strengthening the transatlantic link and to increasing defence investment, in line with Allied commitments.

Our 2026 defence budget represents the most ambitious level of investment since Albania joined the Alliance, contributing to stronger national capabilities and collective security.

I reiterated our full support for #Ukraine as a cornerstone of European security and the continuation of assistance through NATO mechanisms. In this context, I informed Allies that on 12 June, I will co-host in Tirana, together with Minister @andrii_sybiha, the Ukraine-Southeast Europe Ministerial Meeting, an important platform to strengthen political dialogue, enhance regional coordination, and reaffirm our shared commitment to peace, security, and stability in Europe.

I also stressed the importance of a 360-degree approach to #security, strengthening cooperation with Euro-Atlantic partners, and maintaining a strong focus on stability in the Middle East and the #WesternBalkans. Albania remains fully engaged in supporting regional stability, including through Allied discussions on the future of #KFOR and #NATO's cooperation with #Kosovo.

As we move toward the NATO Summit in #Ankara in July 2026, I underscored the importance and the significance of holding the following NATO #Summit in #Tirana, which will represent a historic milestone for the region and a strong signal of the Alliance’s enduring commitment to the Western Balkans.

At the Second Ministerial Conference on Peacekeeping in Francophone Environments held in 📍Rabat 🇲🇦, on behalf of the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, I reaffirmed 🇦🇱 Albania’s strong commitment to UN peacekeeping, multilateralism, and international security. 🇦🇱🇺🇳

Since 1996, nearly 8,000 Albanian personnel have served in UN, NATO, and EU missions, contributing to peace, stability, and civilian protection in complex environments.
Albania supports stronger, more adaptive, and more inclusive peace operations, enhanced international cooperation, and the full implementation of the Women, Peace and Security agenda, while continuing to strengthen capacities in cybersecurity, rule of law, and resilience against hybrid threats and disinformation.

The images shared by Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir showing the humiliating treatment of detained #flotilla activists are shocking and unacceptable.

All persons detained must be treated with dignity and in full respect of human rights, international law, and humanitarian law.

I have instructed our #Embassy in Tel Aviv to remain in close contact and coordination with the Israeli authorities in order to ensure that appropriate consular assistance is provided to our citizen, as needed and in full compliance with international law.

For more than three decades, the @coe has been a key strategic partner for #Albania, providing expertise and tailored support to advance reforms in critical areas such as justice, good governance, media freedom, and the protection of fundamental rights, support for which we are grateful.

As Albania’s journey toward #EU accession accelerates, we are intensifying our cooperation with all relevant partners, including the Council of Europe, to further strengthen the implementation of our EU accession commitments and reinforce democratic institutions and the rule of law.

In this context, the upcoming event in Strasbourg on 28 May represents an important opportunity to demonstrate that Albania is delivering concrete and measurable results, an essential element also in the framework of the post-monitoring dialogue with Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.

The synergies between the Council of Europe’s normative framework and the European Union’s enlargement process create a coherent, complementary, and mutually reinforcing roadmap for sustainable reform and democratic consolidation, one that Albania is fully committed to advancing and fully capitalising on along its path toward EU #membership. 🇦🇱🇪🇺
