"We think it’s safe to say we were all inspired by talking to experts in their fields who were clearly so passionate about what they do. This experience was extraordinary and we are looking forward to continuing working on this project in the future."
TeamDaffDNA had a fabulous trip to @JamesHuttonInst where STEM partners generously gave their time to explain DNA sequencing, confocal and STED microscopy. We loaded #nanopore flow cells and saw super high res images @royalsociety#Partnershipgrants#DaffDNA
"Dr Roberts and all of the researchers at the James Hutton Institute promoted a love for science and learning. Dr Roberts even did a bit of her own research and read up on “astrobotany” just so she could answer our questions."
Loads of fun with Dr Ali Roberts testing the effect of pH on flower pigments, testing their solubility in oil and water and looking at them under the microscope. It was fab to hear her expert knowledge and experience her enthusiasm. #DaffDNA@royalsociety#Partnershipgrants
We are excited to meet our STEM partner Dr Ali Roberts from @JamesHuttonInst next week. She is busy preparing a practical for us to do with her later this month looking at chromoplasts. #DaffDNA@royalsociety#Partnershipgrants
This week we did a crude extraction of DNA from strawberries to help us to understand our #DaffDNA isolation protocol. Then we put our micropipetting skills into practice to loading agarose gels for electrophoresis @royalsociety#Partnershipgrants
An new practical for us, using ultracentrifugation to isolate chloroplasts from homogenised (ground up) plant cells. Our STEM partner Dr Ali Roberts said, "the chloroplast preps are pretty good; clearly green and also impressively free from debris and uniform organelle size!"
