CORNING, Iowa – Ray Gaesser, a beloved Iowa farmer and figure, died Saturday morning after a grain-leg accident on the farm he built outside Corning. He was 73, nine days short of his 74th birthday.

The family wrote that he was hurt that morning and did not come home. People who knew him already knew what that meant.

Ray and Elaine started with a few hundred acres in 1977 and turned it into a real Iowa operation with their son Chris. They now own thousands of acres of corn and beans, 100% no-till since 1991, cover crops since 2010, and with grain going to the ethanol plant down the road.

Neighbors liked him because he always showed up to serve them. He was the guy who served on every board that asked, sold soybeans overseas, and still had time for local activities.

Master Farmer in 2012. American Soybean Association president in 2014. Iowa Conservative Energy Forum chair. DOT commission chair until July. Kim Reynolds called him family. That is how a lot of Adams County talked about him too.

He was the farmer everyone actually liked. Republicans, Democrats, ag groups, conservation people, and the folks who just knew him from church and the co-op. He pushed biofuels and wind taxes that paid the county bills, ran for ag secretary in 2018, lost, and kept working anyway. No bitterness.

Elaine, Chris, Jennifer, and the rest of the family lost the center of that farm. Iowa lost a man who took immense pride in his work, and that vision transferred to the people around him.

The tributes came in fast because they were already written in people’s heads. Ray Gaesser was the pinnacle of what an Iowa farmer is. That is the full story, and it is the true one.
