How to answer Ballot Question 5 in November?

Question 5 would limit how much tax revenue the state can collect each year by tightening the existing revenue growth formula under Chapter 62F. Any money collected above that limit would have to be refunded to taxpayers.

Supporters say this strengthens a 1986 law, keeps state government from growing faster than the economy, and automatically returns excess taxes to the people who paid them.

Opponents argue the tighter limit could create budget shortfalls and force cuts to education, transportation, healthcare, and other services.

I’m voting "YES" because I believe surplus tax revenue belongs back in the pockets of taxpayers, not in bigger government.

However, there is a real question about whether this measure will even matter. Beacon Hill is currently working to repeal Chapter 62F entirely. If lawmakers succeed in eliminating the underlying law, this ballot question could end up having little or no practical effect.

Update: We are working on a follow-up to the LG story and have some disturbing findings re: LG's products. It will take us a while to parse everything and we have involved multiple security researchers, lawyers (working on reading around 40,000 words of LG agreements that are, generally, terrifying in scope), and network experts, but will have an update for you all as soon as we can finalize collecting all of the information and parsing. There is a lot for us to crawl through (and I'm also already up to thousands of dollars in LG product purchases, but each one peels back another layer of the enshittified onion). This will be a fairly large research piece and will take time, but is also the worst I've seen so far in this 'genre' of product and agreements.

Yes, the software is called LG OnScreen Control Plus. it runs silently in the background. it tracks which applications you use, when you use them, and how long. it phones home to LG servers. it cannot be uninstalled through normal means without leaving registry traces.

gamers noticed because some anti-cheat systems flagged it as suspicious software. the monitor was getting people banned from games.

now the TV side:

LG also updated its webOS terms of service. if you use the AI voice features on your LG TV, the company says you may need to inform guests in your home that conversations could be recorded.

not LG informing your guests.

you. the homeowner. legally responsible for notifying anyone who walks into your living room that the television is listening.

LG built a surveillance device. sold it to you. and made the disclosure your legal problem.

so to recap what LG shipped this year:

a monitor that installs tracking software on your PC without asking.

a TV that records conversations in your home and requires you to warn your guests.

both devices look exactly like a monitor and a TV.

neither one tells you what it actually is at the point of sale.

you found out when your game banned you.

or when you read the terms.
