April 12, 2002, early morning: Fidel's call

At 12:38 am, an aide tells him, "Mr. President, you have a call from Commander Fidel Castro."

Chávez picks up the phone immediately, somewhat anxious. Since early in the afternoon of April 11, Fidel had been trying to reach him.

Fidel quickly asks about the situation at that moment, and Chávez responds.

"We're here in the Palace, entrenched," he begins. "We've lost the military force that could have been decisive. They cut our television signal. I have no forces to mobilize and I'm assessing the situation."

"What forces do you have there?" Fidel asks quickly.

"Between 200 and 300 men, completely exhausted."

"Do you have tanks?"

"No, there were tanks but they withdrew to their barracks."

"What other forces can you count on?" Fidel presses.

"There are others further away, but I have no communication with them," Chávez replies, alluding to General Baduel and the paratroopers, the armored division in Maracaibo, and the other loyal forces.

Fidel pauses briefly and with great delicacy says: "May I offer an opinion?"

Chávez responds immediately: "Yes."

"Negotiate honorable and dignified terms, and preserve the lives of your men—they are your most loyal. Don't sacrifice them, and don't sacrifice yourself," Fidel says in the most persuasive tone possible.

"They're all prepared to die here!" Chávez responds with emphasis and emotion.

"I know, but I believe I can think more calmly than you can right now," Fidel adds without missing a beat, as Chávez listens intently to every word.

"Don't resign. Demand honorable, guaranteed conditions so you don't fall victim to treachery—because I believe you must preserve yourself. Besides, you have a duty to your comrades.

Don't immolate yourself!

Don't step down!

Don't resign!"

48 hours later, Chávez was back in the presidency.

Maduro held the line for the socialist project after Chávez died in 2013, when oil prices collapsed from 2014, and when Obama in 2015 laid the 'legal' foundation for the hybrid war on Venezuela. These facts simply do not occur in the Monastery of Trotskyism.
