You have to ask for ice-it doesn’t come automatically, and servers often seemed annoyed, bringing the tiniest amount as if it were rationed, which melted right away in the warm drink. I think we were charged for water in Netherlands but not France if I’m remembering correctly. It’s just different from what we’re accustomed to. The servers here will often bring refills without being asked. We were not given free refills on any drink. I have never asked for ranch dressing,
and it didn’t come automatically with anything, so I can’t speak to that. This was our experience in France and Netherlands. Europe wins on bread though!

Society doesn’t have to live with crime, filth, and decay. Demoralization creates apathy and civic disengagement, cynicism, distrust, and division. It leads to mental and physical health decline and vulnerability to extremism or external subversion. Your post (and the heated thread around it) is a textbook micro-example of how demoralization plays out in real time. Acknowledge the previous disrepair and filthy conditions and acknowledge that progress is possible, as evidenced by the improvements.
