After the murder of Punjab Kesari owner Lala Jagat Narayan, Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale came to the Gurudwara in Chando Kalan village of Hisar district. Chaudhary Bhajan Lal was the Chief Minister at that time and he was very angry with the Khalistanis. He ordered the Haryana Police to carry out an encounter of Bhindranwale. The Haryana Police surrounded the entire village from all sides and appealed to the villagers to maintain peace and not come in between, saying they would finish their work that night and leave. Bhindranwale realised that this was his last night. He immediately contacted India’s Home Minister Giani Zail Singh and requested him to somehow get him out of there, saying he would not even sleep facing towards Haryana again. Giani Zail Singh spoke to Chief Minister Bhajan Lal and asked him to listen to his request and let Bhindranwale go. Reluctantly, Bhajan Lal had to obey and allowed Bhindranwale to leave from there. If the Home Minister had not intervened that day, Bhindranwale’s dead body would have left Chando Kalan.
