A decade on Twitter/X, sharing my thoughts, experiences, and lessons learned from trading.
Grateful 🙏.
Time flies. #MyXAnniversary
Here are a few “aha” moments I’ve had over the years:
‣ Early on, try as many strategies as you can. It’s one of the best ways to figure out what genuinely fits your personality and what you’re naturally drawn to. Once you find it, narrow your focus, master it, and stick with it.
‣ There’s no getting around journaling your trades. Once you’ve built a meaningful sample size across different market environments, you’re basically holding the key 🔑 to your own profitability in your hands—right there in your trading journal. It tells you what actually works for you, and exposes the mistakes you keep making over and over without even realizing it.
‣ The market environment is constantly changing. No strategy works all the time. None.
‣ Avoiding unnecessary losing streaks caused by overtrading is just as important as limiting large losses. It matters enormously for your sanity, confidence, and longevity as a trader.
‣ Sophisticated market theses are seductive because they make us feel smart—especially the gloomy ones. Yet they end up being wrong surprisingly often. In the end, only price pays.
‣ Nine times out of ten, when you feel like crap and suddenly find yourself digging deep into trading psychology, the problem isn’t your psychology. The market environment has simply changed, and your strategy no longer has an edge in the current one.
‣ Market environment and market themes are everything. Nothing trades in a vacuum. Individual stocks are often just leveraged expressions of a broader theme or market environment. Fortunes are made—and lost—during specific market regimes.
‣ Tune out other people’s opinions. It’s one of the best ways to start hearing your own voice, trusting your own observations, and sharpening your own trading skills.
"Your job as a trader is to wait for the best opportunities. Money is made by stalking and sitting, NOT by being active and forcing a new trade each day."
- Dan Zanger
Discipline is boring.
Hard work is boring.
Studying is boring.
Doing the same thing every day is boring.
As a man who wants to go far in life, learn to be bored, silent, and alone.
Also, in poker, you have a bad day, no problem. Games are always running you can make the money back with a few solid sessions. Wake up the next day, back to the grind.
Trading, bad drawdown at the end of a rally? You will have to wait months at a minimum and more likely years for another big opportunity.
The patience required is on another level. The entire time, the market is there, moving, giving the illusion of opportunity disguised as volatility.
These are the quotes I repeat daily to program my mind to become more patient:
---
“It never was my thinking that made the big money for me. It was always my sitting“
“Although the cheetah is the fastest animal in the world and can catch any animal on the plains, it will wait until its absolutely sure it can catch its prey.” - Mark Weinstein
“Trading shouldn’t be hard. You shouldn’t be sitting there and working your ass off making trades all the time. You should only trade a certain setup when the conditions are good for that setup” - Qullamaggie
“A good setup should be obvious. You are looking at it and you are like WOW, that is an INSANE setup” - Qullamaggie
“The big trades are pretty simple, you don’t have to go looking for them, but you do have to wait for them.” ~ Amrit Sall
“Trading opportunities in the market ebb and flow, there will be periods in the market where the opportunities dry up and there will be nothing to do. In those nothing periods if you’re looking for something to do, that is when you can create real damage to your account.” ~ Amrit Sall
“I now know that 90% of the time the market is not going to provide any opportunities, and 10% of the time I am going to make 90% of my profits.” ~ Amrit Sall
“It’s what you don’t do that counts. Patience is the key word, successful trading is the art of doing nothing, it’s what you don’t do between the real trade opportunities that will determine your success in the long run. You can do so much damage to your mental capital between trades that when the big trades turn up , you’re not ready for it.” ~ Amrit Sall
Money cannot consistently be made trading every day or every week during the year — “There is the Wall Street fool, who thinks he must trade all the time. No man can always have adequate reasons for buying or selling stocks daily…The desire for constant action irrespective of underlying conditions is responsible for many losses in Wall Street even among the professionals, who feel that they must take home some money every day, as though they were working for regular wages”
"[FOMO]. [FOMO] is the mind killer. [FOMO] is the little death that brings total obliteration. I will face my [FOMO]. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn to see its path. Where the [FOMO] has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
Ages 21 to 35 can be tough: You’re dealing with your parents getting older, fewer friends, career stress and self-doubt. Stay strong. You’ve got this bro.
Give a man free sex, entertainment, and comfort, and he’ll forget his goals.
Give him pain and heartbreak, and he’ll feel like conquering the world.
Dear son, hard times are a blessing, not a curse.
Never apologize for being obsessed. Read all day. Work all night. Run for hours. Forget that time exists. Be everywhere, but be a ghost. Disconnect from the world and create your own. Positive obsession is a gift disguised as a curse.
Do whatever it is you can to trade with a carefree state of mind, detached from the results and money.
One of my favorite quotes from a Chinese sage:
"When the archer shoots for no particular prize, he has all his skills; when he shoots to win a brass buckle, he is already nervous; when he shoots for a gold prize, he goes blind, sees two targets, and is out of his mind.
His skill has not changed? But the prize divided him. He cares! He thinks more of winning than of shooting, and the need to win drains him of power."
WHAT THE F*CK ARE YOU AFRAID OF
- Death : We’re all gonna die.
- Bankruptcy : You can make it all back.
- Shame : Everyone will forget in a week.
- Rejection : It happens to everyone.
- Failure : It’s part of the path.
- Judgment : They’ll judge anyway.
- Losing people : Not all are meant to stay.
- Making mistakes : You’ll survive them.
- Taking risks : Regret hurts more.
Live every day like it's your last day.
it's actually not that deep bro. hit the gym. drink your water. fix your sleep schedule. save up. put your money to work. cut off people draining you. go chase your purpose. that empty feeling fades once you do this. trust me.
25–30 will humble you fast.
Circle gets smaller.
Parents get older in real time.
You’re fixing old mistakes while trying to get money, health, and your head right at the same time.
Life stops feeling like a trailer. It becomes the movie.
Carry it anyway.
success favors the bold.
every person you look up to had to move before they knew how it would turn out. had to take the risk. had to make the first move. had to find out what reality would give them back instead of sitting around trying to predict it.
create your own path by actually fucking moving.
“You will lose friends, you will lose lovers, You will lose comfort, but if in losing them, You find yourself, you have gained more than Kings.”
*- Marcus Aurelius
